What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Technician position at City of Minnetonka?
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responds to emergency calls quickly, safely and with the proper protective equipment to provide fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical assistance to the public.
- Maintains and operates fire department apparatus, equipment and facilities in a constant state of readiness for all divisions of the fire department.
- May be assigned to a primary schedule (24-hour) shift as a primary Firefighter or Driver/Operator
- May be assigned to a secondary schedule (40-hour week) as a 40-hour Technician.
- Either is assigned to or supplements duty crew shifts as needed.
- Ensures adherence to department policies, procedures and safety practices.
- Participates in training sessions to maintain and upgrade fire, rescue, and medical skills.
- Organizes, schedules and maintains accurate and complete records of all inspection and maintenance activities including those performed by the public works department and or outside vendors.
- Recommends policy and procedure changes to enhance apparatus and equipment performance.
- Assists with fleet management during annual testing of pumps, ladders and hose.
- Performs snow removal, housekeeping, and grounds maintenance at fire stations.
- Delivers supplies, equipment and mail to satellite fire stations.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Other Job Functions:
- Organizes, schedules, and performs periodic maintenance on fire apparatus, equipment and facilities including factory authorized work on self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Coordinates all inspection and maintenance activities performed by outside vendors
- Assists firefighters with cleaning and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Provides support to fire prevention activities such as set up and maintenance of displays.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, policies and methods of fire suppression and firefighting.
- Current programs and practices concerning firefighter training and safety.
- Emergency medical services and hazardous materials response practices.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Interpret instructions, use logic and make reasonable decisions regarding the safety of team members and his/ her own self.
- Perform strenuous activities or exert peak physical effort during emergency, training or investigation activities for prolonged periods under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat or cold and dense smoke.
- Establish positive working relationships with the public, City staff, fire personnel, and other agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minnesota State Firefighter II certifications.
- Minnesota State certified Emergency Medical Technician.
- Hazardous Materials Operations certified.
- Possess a valid MN driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications
- Blue Card certified
- Two or more years of firefighter experience
- Fire Apparatus Operator certificate
- Minnesota State certified Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic
- Commercial Driver License

This is a non-exempt, union position with a contract currently under negotiation. This is the following hourly pay range for 2025:

SELECTION PROCESS
ATTEND MEETING – April 14
Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend a meeting that will discuss the Department, attributes of a Fire Technician on the Minnetonka Fire Department, steps of the process and how to best prepare. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions. More details to be shared closer to the event date.
REVIEW OF CANDIDATES QUALIFICATIONS – Through April 18
Applicants who successfully meet or exceed the preferred qualifications will move on to panel interviews.
PANEL AND FUNCTIONAL INTERVIEW – Week of April 21 and Week of April 28
Panel interview will include questions on the candidate’s professional background, firefighting acumen, and knowledge, skills and abilities. The functional interview will offer candidates a series of oral questions regarding situations that may be faced as a fire technician on the Minnetonka Fire Department.
SHIFT RIDE-ALONG – Week of May 5
The candidate will embed with a shift and join as a participant or observer in shift life activities and emergency calls. Candidate will be evaluated based upon involvement, interaction, and fit with culture and shared values.
FINALISTS CHIEF’S INTERVIEW – Week of May 12
This interview will be with chief officers. During this interview we will clarify anything needed about the candidates experience and examine the observations made during observations of fire department activities.
FINALIST IDENTIFIED / CONDITIONAL OFFER - Week of May 26
The selected candidate who successfully passes both rounds of interviews and the panel presentation will receive a contingent offer. This offer will outline instructions and next steps. The offer is contingent on the candidate successfully passing (or confirmation of previously passing) the City's evaluation of the following: physical exam, psychological evaluation, the validation of any previous fire-related certifications and education.
BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL EXAM WITH DRUG SCREEN, CERTIFICATION VALIDATION AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION
In the case of a candidate who has not completed these steps during their initial employment screening, a background check, physical exam with drug screen and psychological examination will need to be completed.
The candidate’s certifications and education will be validated.
Salary : $36 - $43
