What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Coordinator - Camp HopTonka position at City of Minnetonka?
Work alongside another Program Coordinator to oversee all aspects of supervision, planning, preparation, and leading a brand new summer camp, Camp HopTonka. Camp HopTonka is a weekly themed camps designed to engage children (Ages 7-12) in a variety of fun, active, and educational activities. Each week, campers will explore a unique theme through multiple field trips, outdoor adventures (park visits, canoeing, archery, fishing, etc.), sports, arts & crafts, team-building games and more. To provide convenient transportation for all camp activities and field trips, Program Coordinators will have to drive participants in a 15-passenger van. Basic training will be provided. Camp HopTonka’s home base will be the Williston Fitness Center classroom. Program dates are June 9-Aug 14. Camp is Monday-Thursday (Friday is a half day for staff prep) from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., 32-35 hours per week. Staff will start mid-May for program lesson planning. |
- Start position mid-May to complete program prep work.
- Must be willing to drive participants in a City owned 15 passenger van to different field trips/outings (basic training will be provided).
- Assist in oversight and provide direction to an additional Program Lead staff person.
- Program development including lesson planning and supply use tailored to specific themes which includes sports, group games, arts & crafts, outdoor/nature (i.e. fishing, canoeing, etc.), many field trips, outside vendor partnerships, and more
- Determine, organize, and use equipment and supplies needed for all phases of the programs.
- Participate in content specific trainings prior to camp start to understand how to lead them for the camp.
- Effectively lead and participate in all planned program activities.
- Oversee daily operations including correspondence with parents, participant registration and supply inventory.
- Maintain proper communication with Program Manager.
- Complete all required paperwork and other office work related to program.
- Ensure safety precautions are taken in all activities and enforce all established policies and procedures are followed.
- Provide support as needed for all participants and staff to create an inclusive environment.
- Additional duties as assigned by Program Manager.
- A commitment to and belief in the organization's shared values.
- High school degree or equivalent GED completed.
- Age 21 with coursework or equivalent experience in education, recreation or related field.
- Primarily open availability for summer with limited time off.
- Two years or more of experience leading a variety of youth recreational activities (indoors and outdoors).
- One year or more of relevant lesson planning experience.
- One year or more of experience in a supervisory and/or specific applicable leadership role.
- Good common sense and problem solving skills, safety conscious, reliable, assertive, and a self-starter all with limited supervision.
- A creative mind and assertive personality to plan, lead and implement recreational activities with a passion for serving kids in a recreational setting.
- Organizational skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Must have a valid Driver's License and successfully pass a driver’s license check.
- Prioritizing safety and supervision at every turn while driving the city vehicle.
- Maintain positive rapport and communication with campers and their parents/guardians throughout each camp.
Desired Job Qualifications:
- Completed degree in education, recreation or related field with at least 6 months experience in the field.
- Experience driving a multi-passenger van and/or pulling a trailer.
- CPR and first aid certification.
- Outdoor recreation experience (i.e. canoeing, archery, fishing, etc.).
- Understanding of child behavior, experience in recreational activities, and ability to relate with and supervise youth successfully.
