This an advanced level position that inspects, maintains and repairs the City's wastewater lift stations, sump wells and related pressurized wastewater transmission/conveyance equipment including the master pump station and booster station to ensure efficient operations of the City’s wastewater collection system. Assists other work crews as required. Reports to the Lift Station Supervisor. This classification is distinguished from Lift Station Mechanic I and II by greater experience, training and licensing requirements.
- Monitors, maintains, repairs, replaces and installs lift station SCADA systems.
- Maintains instrumentation devices such as pump control units, telemetry control units, flow meters, level control devices and gauges.
- Performs diagnostic measurements and data gathering, using digital and analog volt/ohm meters, temperature, and pressure gauges and digital calipers. Calculates various flow devices.
- Installs, troubleshoots and repairs piping, valves, pumps, motors, processes equipment and electrical controls, working with up to 480 volts of electricity.
- Evaluates, prioritizes and repairs lift stations and other wastewater facilities.
- Responds to emergency work orders for lift station alarms, sewer backups, and similar issues for residential and commercial customers.
- Performs preventative maintenance on pumps, gate valves, check valves, plug valves and their associated fixtures.
- Reviews, inspects and locates sewer and stormwater lines.
- Performs installation and maintenance of fire hydrants, pumps, valves, and other appurtenances utilizing crane truck.
- Operates or supervises operation of Jet-Vac truck to clean and pump out wet wells, manholes, and gravity sewer lines.
- Prepares preventative maintenance records and reports.
- Maintains and repairs air release valves.
- Reads lift station, alternative water, and sewer meters.
- Maintains alternative water pump stations and wells.
- Maintains property in and around lift stations.
- Performs lift station emergency on-call duties on a rotating basis.
- Serves as essential personnel during natural or man-made disasters and emergencies.
- Provides first-line supervision of field personnel and resources in the maintenance of the City's Wastewater Lift Stations, Master Pump Station and Booster Pump Station, ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations, codes, and standards of quality and safety.
- Assists in updating equipment maintenance databases and in preparing maintenance records and reports.
- Monitors pumping facilities’ operations to ensure proper flow.
- Monitors SCADA system and components for proper operation.
- Assists in preparing requisitions for materials, supplies and equipment.
- Coordinates activities with other sections, divisions and departments as required.
- Assists in ensuring that all safety practices, rules, and regulations are being followed.
- Responds to customer complaints and follows through to a satisfactory conclusion.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, subordinates, other department heads and employees, other City employees, contractors, customers, sales representatives, and the general public.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent and 5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Must possess a Class “A” Wastewater Collection Certification within 1 year of employment.
- Must possess or obtain a valid Florida CDL Class "B" driver's license.
- Must have a competent person certification for confined space entry or obtain within 1 year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:

- Vocational, technical training
- Wastewater Collection System Operator C/B/A certification
- Water Distribution Operator Level 1/2/3 License
- Backflow Prevention Certification
- Journeyman Plumber Certification
- Machinist Certification
- Vendor Pump and Motor Certification
- NASSCO Pipeline/Lateral/Manhole Certification
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification
