DEPARTMENT: Parks Department
SALARY: $14.00 per hour
HOURS: 7am – 3pm
DEFINITION:
Employee leads crew at the direction of Landscape Manager with daily maintenance of all Municipal owned landscaping at Parks, Riverwalk, Municipal Buildings, Parking Lots, and Traffic Islands
EQUIPMENT USED:
1. Hand Tools (Shovels, Rakes, Broom, Pruners, Hand Saw, Loppers)
2. Power tools (Blowers, Hedge Trimmers, Weed Whips, Push Mowers)
3. PPE
4. City Work truck (non-CDL)
JOB LOCATION:
Mishawaka Parks, Riverwalk, Municipal Owned Space
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees are constantly moving, bending, stooping, and lifting for long periods of time. High dexterity is required for weeding, pruning, and planting. Must have enough endurance to work in heat or cold and operate power blowers, hedge-trimmers, and push mowers for extended periods of time without rest. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs unassisted.
ENVIROMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employee is subject to all types of weather, loud noises from power tools, dirt, dust, and pollen from plants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Employees perform a variety of landscape tasks utilizing horticulture knowledge. Tasks include: Weeding, cleaning, trash removal from landscape locations, planting, pruning, and any other tasks requested by Landscape Manager. Candidate must be able to work periodically without supervision from director and must be able to lead small team projects.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
A. Maintain clean and orderly landscape across the City of Mishawaka by: Keeping flower beds free of weeds and unwanted plants, removing trash from parks and flower beds, keeping bushes and trees trimmed, and flowerbeds mulched
B. Work along side additional part time / seasonal staff to maintain parks without direct supervision of Landscape Manager or Assistant
C. Plant flowers, both annual and perennial, each year at our show parks, municipal signs, and park signs
D. Keep sidewalks clean of debris left by plants, people, and geese using leaf blowers
E. Clean, maintain, and be responsible with equipment
F. Operate non-CDL City vehicles
G. Working in the MEF Community Greenhouse watering plants
H. Assist with general and specific user herbicides in all municipal owned flower beds, walking and spraying around desired plant material
I. Assist with use of preventative herbicides in key areas to reduce unwanted weeds and plants from germinating
J. Any job requested by Landscape Manager or Supervisor
QUALIFICATION:
A. Driver’s License Required
B. Must have High School diploma or equivalency
C. Must have at least one year of experience in a landscape related field
D. Must be at Least 18 years of age
