Library Outreach Worker

Contract Duration : Up to 18 months

Reporting to the Manager, Central Library & Community Development, the Library Outreach Worker will provide and coordinate services to individuals experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. The Library Outreach Worker will support individuals (16 years and older) who are experiencing homelessness, living in the community and accessing Mississauga Library, and will assist individuals in developing a housing plan and connect them with health and social services.

Duties and Responsibilities

System Navigation

Develop a system of care approach for those who are experiencing homelessness by developing a collaboration and coordination of services with our partner community agencies.
Conduct basic assessments.
Provide services and support to youth and adult populations, and make referrals to partnering organizations.
Provide advocacy where required and assist individuals to self-advocate.
Develop electronic records, reports and statistics necessary for program functioning.

Community Collaboration

Initiate and encourage partnerships with social services agencies and community organizations.

Program Development

Train library staff to understand the needs and support individuals and families experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges.

Support and direct the activities of the Open Window Hub.

Develop programs for the Open Window Hub.

Support City Staff

Encourage cross departmental thinking and collaboration.

Conduct socio-demographic research and make recommendations on divisional issues.

Respond to politicians, public and staff from various departments, in consultation with library leadership team.

Follow City Corporate Policies and Procedures.

Represent the Library on external committees.

Skills and Qualifications

Degree in social work or related field; must be a registered member with the Ontario College of Social Workers.

Masters of Social Work is an asset.

Minimum Five (5) years of experience working with the homeless population, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working knowledge of Housing First principles.

Minimum Five (5) years of experience providing individual / family support and community development.

First Aid and CPR certified.

Knowledge of community resources and services.

Demonstrated crisis management skills.

Exceptional leadership skills and strong interpersonal skills.

Excellent customer service skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Excellent judgment and analytical skills.

Working knowledge of applicable legislative requirements.

Must be able to travel between City of Mississauga and external local facilities.

Flexible work hours are required, including evenings and weekends.

A Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) will be required of the successful candidate, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Hourly Rate / Salary : $41.93 - $55.91 / $76,313.00 - $101,753.00
