  • Perform electronic maintenance and repair functions, including repairing two-way radios and pagers; maintaining radio base station and repeaters; testing, repairing, and modifying traffic signals, etc. 
  • Install, operate, and maintain computerized closed loop traffic control systems, vehicle detection devices, and complex mobile data terminals with radio modems; install and repair emergency vehicle equipment; install and upgrade software program and change user registry on system servers.
  • Develop wiring plans and install wiring for traffic signals; replace lamps and bulbs in signals and luminaires. 
  • Troubleshoot various problems with program software and equipment, including traffic controllers; provide necessary solutions and repairs.
  • Install, repair, program, and modify radio communication equipment, digital microwave equipment, sewage treatment plant alarm telemetry, office alarm systems, video cameras, recording equipment, public address systems, and audio equipment for all City departments.
  • Design and develop methods to modify equipment and electronic systems for alternate uses. 
  • Perform tests and evaluations on equipment and electronics systems.
  • Maintain equipment, including ordering parts, and providing purchasing recommendations, 
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.   
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering and radio site construction management principles and practices, including operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signalization, signal timing, traffic detection devices, and street lighting.
  • Knowledge of electronics principles and practices, including operation, modification, maintenance, and repair of various communication systems such as: two-way radios, pagers, alarms, emergency vehicle equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote public works safety considerations, public right-of-way practices, work zone signing requirements, City safety policies, and OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • Skill in performing complex electronic maintenance, modifications, and repairs.
  • Skill in operating and setting up office equipment, mobile data terminals with radio modems, and other various computer software and databases, including software installation and utilizing Microsoft 365, with the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment. 
  • Skill in analyzing and wiring electrical equipment.
  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to understand electronics schematics, repair manuals, and blueprints.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and provide solutions to various problems and situations.
  • Ability to safely operate various tools, vehicles, and other job-specific equipment.
  • Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures, including state and federal traffic regulations.
  • Ability to obtain Traffic Signal Technician II certification after three (3) years of employment.

Working Conditions:

  • Position requires the ability to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. or less.
  • Work environment may include exposure to unavoidable weather conditions, occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including working in high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Duties require the ability to access work site at extreme elevations using a bucket truck or climbing radio towers.
  • Position may require a rotation of standby/on-call shifts to respond to emergencies outside regular hours.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years of electronics, traffic engineering experience or another relevant field.        
  • Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.  
  • Must have or the ability to obtain Work Zone Traffic Control certification within three (3) of hire.
  • Must have or the ability to obtain FCC Radio Telephone Operator’s License within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must have or the ability to obtain Traffic Signal Technician I certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Experience or training in Mobile Radio Frequency (RF) Technology, preferred.
