JOB TITLE: Police Patrol Officer
REPORTS TO: Police Chief
DEPARTMENT: Police
SUPERVISES: NIA
A. MAJOR DUTIES:
The job of Police Patrol Officer involves the responsibility for the enforcement of law, ordinances, prevention and detection of crime, and protection of the general welfare of the citizens of the city. A Patrol Officer may perform his/her duties in a police vehicle, or on foot. The primary work of a Patrol Officer is to perform routine patrolling of the City according to the established departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations and under the direction of
the Police Chief. A Patrol Officer is expected to exercise independent judgment in the handling
of situations and responding to emergency calls within the guidelines provided by the department and command officers. The job involves a certain amount of personal danger. The work of a Patrol Officer is reviewed and evaluated by the Police Chief through observation and monitoring written reports. Patrol Officers may be assigned to provide field training for new officers and to function as team leader on special assignments.
B. TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:
1. Operate a police vehicle and communicate with the police communication center and other units by a two-way radio.
2. Arrest law violators, commit prisoners to jail, testify in court and
Department of Motor Vehicle "DMV, work with other law enforcement agencies as requested, and follow-up on status of investigations or proceedings involving such arrests.
3. Keep current on changes in laws, ordinances and court decisions, which affect law
enforcement activities.
4. Prepare written reports on all incidents handled during a shift, including input of information to any computerized police records program which may be used.
5. Respond to fire and emergency calls within the city limits as needed.
6. Respond to and investigate all motor vehicle accidents.
7. Direct the flow of traffic when necessary.
8. Be knowledgeable of all Police Department and City policies, procedures, rules and regulations, as well as State Statues and City Ordinances, which pertain to the Police Department.
9. Assist in investigations of crimes and other matters which require the search, seizure and preservation of evidence.
10. Assist the general public in filing complaints and getting a favorable response from the
Police Department.
11. Maintain weapons and equipment when necessary.
12. Report any deficiencies with weapons and all other equipment to the Police Chief.
Attend in-service and specialized training programs in area related to police work or professional development as assigned.
14. Attend Department personnel meetings as assigned.
15. Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in all phases of police work.
16. Performs regular patrol duty on a rotating shift basis.
17. Subject to being "on-call" when the Police Chief is out of town and another Officer is not on-duty.
18. Performs other duties as assigned by the Police Chief.

C. ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
1 . Inspects and ensures proper care for facilities and equipment.
2. Prepares other detailed reports as required
D. QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Completion of advanced in criminal justice or related field preferred. Training at a state or national police training school or college graduate highly desirable. Prior experience as a Police Officer or Patrol Deputy in a law enforcement agency preferred. Must be able to react calmly and quickly in case of emergency and to make correct decisions in such cases. Must have proven skills in the use of firearms; knowledge of basic first aid; knowledge of basic computer operation and application to police work; knowledge of state laws, city ordinances and administrative rules and regulations for police departments in Nebraska; knowledge of the types and uses of firearms, communication systems and automotive equipment used in modern police work; ability to keep records and prepare reports; and have the ability to demonstrate an understanding of good fiscal management practices in the handling of a departmental budget. Must reside within a 15-minute response area.
E. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1 . Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Nebraska driver's license.
2. Must possess or be able to obtain Law Enforcement Certification in the State of
Nebraska.
