The City of Mobile is seeking a highly skilled and experienced legal professional to serve as the Chief Assistant City Attorney for the Civil Division. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the daily workflow of contracts, ordinances, and legal opinions from various City departments. The Chief Assistant City Attorney will also supervise a dedicated team of in-house attorneys and paralegals, providing guidance and leadership in managing complex legal matters.

Key responsibilities include representing the City in internal legal matters, defending the City in lawsuits, and handling complaints and other legal actions. The position requires superior leadership and supervisory skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contracts, municipal law, and litigation, and possess significant experience in managing a diverse legal team.

The Chief Assistant City Attorney for the Civil Division will play a crucial role in maintaining the City’s legal integrity and ensuring that legal processes align with the City’s best interests.

CHIEF ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY – CIVIL DIVISION

Kind of Work

This is civil legal work for an experienced attorney for a Chief Assistant City Attorney (CACA) in the Civil Division for the City of Mobile.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

. Defend the interests of the City of Mobile from suits alleging statutory torts, constitutional torts, employment discrimination, and a myriad of other claims.  Represent the municipal government's interests in internal legal matters.

. Represent the City of Mobile in contested matters such as objections to claims, personnel board hearings and adversary proceedings.

. Assist the Civil Division by maintaining the daily workflow of contracts, ordinances, legal opinions from other City departments.

. Supervise a team of inhouse lawyers and paralegal, to include overseeing division meetings and trainings.

. Monitor the schedules of civil lawyers and their paralegals and support staƯ, including meeting times and oƯice hours.

. Supervise outside litigation regarding City employees and City owned property as delegated by the City Attorney or Deputy City Attorney.

. Assist the executive branch of government with maintaining consistent policy decisions made in conjunction with external governmental agencies.

. Track State legislation relative to the City of Mobile; and researching public records requests.

. Responsible for such other civil cases as are assigned, including occasional appellate work before the Circuit Court, the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals and the Alabama Supreme Court.

. Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

. Juris Doctor Degree.

. Minimum five years' post-JD experience in the legal field.

. A strong civil litigation background is preferred.

. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Special Requirement

Admission to the Alabama State Bar.

. Assists the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney in planning and developing the City's legal program.

.Works in accordance with general policies and established legal standards and practices.

. Receives general review from the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney.

. May supervise attorneys, professional and clerical employees.
