Calling all electricians, we have an amazing opportunity for you to join our Utilities department. We are looking for qualified electricians to join our team!
Upcoming Salary Increases and Incentives:
3% COLA effective July 1, 2025

2.5% Education Incentive (bachelor's degree)
5% Education Incentive (master's degree)

When assigned to Public Works, to perform a wide variety of skilled duties involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment involved with electrical support, including streetlights, street signals, automated traffic management systems, lighted crosswalks, building lighting, and may include working with high voltage up to 5,000 volts; and to assist with the training of personnel in the City’s electrician training program.  
 
When assigned to Utilities, to perform difficult and complex technical work in the design, testing, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of pneumatic, electronic, and electrical control and data acquisition systems and equipment for water and wastewater distribution, collection, and treatment operations, and may include working with voltage up to 1,000 volts; and to assist with the training of personnel in the City’s trainee programs.

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Repair and replace defective or non-working electrical parts in communication hubs, motors, generators, pumps, controllers, switches, and other facilities and equipment. 

Test, locate, and repair damaged electrical circuitry, communication, and fiber optic systems; may verify factory testing on new sites and field test acceptance.
 
Inspect electrical equipment and lighting to ensure safe and satisfactory functioning.  
 
Read blueprints, schematics, and electrical diagrams; participate in the design of electrical systems as necessary; recommend the development or changes to specifications.
 
Read and interpret wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, manuals, and specifications used during installations or when performing repair work.
 
May operate heavy equipment including backhoes, aerials, and other construction equipment; establish work zones and set up traffic controls and detours.
 
Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
 
Perform confined space entries per City and Cal OSHA standards to include sections; 5157 - Permit Required Confined Spaces, 5158 – Other Confined Space Operations and 5144 – Respiratory Protection.

Maintain service records, identify sources, and participate in the development of specifications for requisitions for parts and electrical equipment.  
 
Develop material lists; obtain prices and purchase materials; maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs.  
 
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
 
May train and have one or more assigned staff.
 
When assigned to Public Works:
Diagnose problems and perform complex electrical maintenance and repair work involving municipal facilities, buildings, and traffic signal and lighting systems, including high voltage systems, traffic management, and closed-circuit television systems.  
 
Install, maintain, and repair traffic signals and street lighting, including underground and overhead lines, poles, control circuits, preemption units, battery backup, detection loops, cameras, and microwaves; install, maintain, and repair communication systems including fiber optic, twisted pair, and radio equipment.  

Install, maintain, and repair control systems, motors, generators, analyzers, sensors, detectors, and other electromechanical and electronic equipment, including replacing boards, cards, chips, and other components.
 
Install, maintain, and repair electrical and lighting equipment, automated traffic control systems (ATMS), and intercommunication and computer systems in the City's buildings and parks.   
 
When assigned to Utilities:
Install, maintain, test, calibrate, diagnose, repair, and adjust computer system hardware and software, high voltage systems, closed circuit television, telemetry, and equipment and components of process control and the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system; may create remote telemetry unit (RTU) programs, points, and graphics.
 
Install, maintain, and repair control systems, motors, generators, pumps, telemetering systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), analyzers, sensors, detectors, and other electromechanical and electronic equipment, including replacing boards, cards, chips, and other components.
 
Design, install, repair, calibrate, and maintain control circuits for monitoring and controlling flow, temperature, motion, pressure, motor controls, remote telemetry unit interface, chemical composition, and program system components for water and wastewater systems.
 
Configure process and instrumentation diagrams, control loop parameters, and logic for programmable logic controllers and control systems.
 
Maintain a variety of electronic control instruments used to operate electrical mechanical equipment, record data, indicate equipment status, and activate supervisory control.

Read blueprints, schematics, and electrical diagrams; participate in the design of electrical systems as necessary; may design controls for water sites; may design control sequence of operations of water sites; recommend development or changes to specifications.
 
Use a variety of test equipment including computers, oscilloscopes, frequency generators, and other specialized equipment or devices to calibrate, repair, and maintain system.

Use a laptop or personal computer to communicate with the SCADA system, RTU’s, and radios.
 
Train operations and maintenance staff on process control equipment.
 
Marginal Functions:

Perform related duties as assigned.  

Knowledge of:  

Principles and practices used to design, construct, install, and maintain electrical and electronic systems, traffic signals, and street lighting.  

Principles of electrical and electronic repair. 

Electrical codes and related ordinances and regulations. 

Electric motors and control systems.   

Basic electronic circuitry.   

Input and output addressing. 

Practices of troubleshooting electrical, basic electronic, and fiber optic systems. 

Methods, materials, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the repair of electrical and mechanical devices.   

Safe work practices, including work zone safety, traffic controls, and confined space entry.    

Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. 

Ability to:  

Learn to perform work in the trade area of electrical and electronic maintenance and repair.   

Use and care for tools and equipment used in maintaining and repairing electrical and electronic devices.   

Work with high voltage AC wiring and low voltage DC wiring. 

Work with analog circuit troubleshooting. 

Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. 

Perform journey level work in the trade area of electrical and electronic maintenance and repair.   

Repair electrical signal, lighting, control, and alarm systems.   

Understand and interpret written and oral instructions, including blueprints and wiring diagrams.   

Diagnose causes of electrical malfunction. 

Perform mathematical computations as required in electrical and electronic circuits.   

Assist others in municipal electrical and electronic maintenance repair.   

Learn the difference between source and supply wiring.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.   

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.   

Experience and Training Guidelines:  

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:   

Experience:  

Minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as an Electrician Apprentice, Electrician or Electrical Maintenance. 

Training:  

High School diploma or GED equivalency.

Completion of an Electrician/Electrical Apprentice Program with a minimum of 8,000 working hours and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience.

License or Certificate:  

Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial California driver’s license with specific endorsements, as assigned, is required within sixty (60) days of appointment. 

When assigned, possession of a valid Crane Operator Certificate, issued by the National Commission of Crane Operators, is required within six (6) months of assignment. 

Failure to obtain any of the required licenses/certifications within the prescribed time will result in release from probation or termination.

Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent bending and squatting. Lifting: frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision. Must possess vision corrected to normal, including color vision sufficient to distinguish colored wires and indicator lights. Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. May be required to wear ear protection or hear in noisy conditions. Must possess hearing sufficient to safely work in traffic. Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; frequent working alone. Environmental: frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to high voltage, chemicals, fumes, wastewater, storm water and other environmental substances.

Working Conditions
 
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to typical street or field noise and environment including exposure to loud equipment and machinery and inclement weather. Incumbents regularly work with high voltage power lines and equipment and some duties are performed at night. Incumbents may work in aerial trucks at heights above 40 feet. Some positions may be assigned to remote locations. Positions may require occasional overtime, stand by, or weekend work and travel is rare.
