The Public Works Department is seeking an experienced and motivated Solid Waste Supervisor to lead, coordinate, and manage key operations in our Solid Waste Division. This is a vital leadership role responsible for planning, organizing, and directing solid waste operations. You’ll oversee daily activities across assigned areas within the division, ensuring services are effective, efficient, and aligned with regulations and community needs.
The Solid Waste Supervisor is responsible to plan, organize, direct and supervise the activities in various assigned areas within the solid waste division; to coordinate solid waste activities with other divisions, departments, entities, and governmental agencies; and to prepare grant applications, administer grants, and monitor legislation.

Essential Functions:
Administer a waste awareness program; advertise the program and conduct public relations activities; encourage citizen participation in waste reduction and diversion.
Determine most effective method of allocating monies designated for solid waste. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of assigned staff.
Determine methods to modify content of waste stream to divert more waste from the landfill.
Conduct regular and special studies; collect and analyze data; record and present findings and recommendations.
Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
Prepare and submit grants and proposals.
Assist in coordinating tours of local solid waste, compost, and recycling facilities.
Recommend goals and objectives; assist in the development of policies and procedures.

Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for budget items; monitor and control expenditures.
Increase public participation by conducting events and participating in events in the City.
Provide support to Code Enforcement with route reviews and participate in public education.
Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action to resolve complaints, as necessary.
Prepare programs to increase citizen awareness of the need to remove recyclables and organics from waste stream.
Implement procedures to improve the economic feasibility of waste collection services.
Assist in defining the City's role in creating, implementing, managing and evaluating waste programs.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Three years of responsible experience in grant management, community service outreach programs, or a related field. Experience with waste reduction, or other solid waste programs is desirable.
Training:
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental science, resource management, public administration, or a related field.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a typical temperature controlled office environment subject to typical office noise and environment. Some positions may be assigned to remote locations. Positions will require occasional overtime or weekend work and travel is rare.
