What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Instructor- Summer position at City of Monona?
Under the leadership of Monona Parks & Recreation supervisors, the recreation program instructor helps plan and implement engaging activities for children enrolled in the Monona Parks & Recreation’s youth sports and recreation programming for ages 3-8. Program instructors teach and supervise a variety of different programs, including soccer, football, baseball, strength/agility training, and/or wiffleball. Instructors need not have expertise in any given activity but must be able to generally teach a wide variety of recreational activities. Training is provided. This is a seasonal position with 2 session windows:
Hours for this position are generally afternoon shifts from 12:30pm-3:30pm for soccer and football and morning shifts from 9am-11:30am for strength/agility training but can include filling in for other shifts if available. Weekly hours will vary from 5-20, depending on availability, experience, and training. Wage range is $15-$20 per hour based on experience, education, and qualifications. Wage is determined with the following critera:

- Must be at least 15 years of age at the start of employment and eligible to work in the United States.
- Minimum of 1 years of working with youth/adults in a childcare/recreation setting strongly preferred but not required .
- Must be certified in First Aid and CPR, at a minimum. These may be obtained onsite during staff training June 12-13, 2025.
- Other certifications (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, etc.) are a plus.
- Must be able to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid and assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury, or weather).
- Strong oral communication skills, and the ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.
- Must pass a background check if over 18 and provide other forms and details.
- Ability to travel in and around Monona to program site locations.
- Ability to work varied hours, and to be punctual and dependable.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

- Ability to use equipment that is specific to the program being taught and the ability to use first aid supplies.
- Ability to work indoors as well as outdoors in varying weather conditions, including cold, heat and humidity, rain, wind, and sun.
- Ability to work in noisy environments.
