What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Bike Camp Leader position at City of Monona?
Monona Parks & Recreation offers summer camp programming for kids of all ages, including a Tween Bike Camp for youth ages 10-14. Bike camp meets at Maywood Park in Monona and takes daily field trips to local attractions using bicycles as transportation. The Bike Camp Leader leads and ensures the safety of kids on group rides, assists with developing bike camp programming, and organizes group activities and team-building exercises. Bike camp activities may include basic bike mechanics, safe riding, environmental education, adventure education (swimming, canoeing, rock climbing) and group rides.
This is a seasonal position, beginning in mid-June and ending in mid-August. Hours for this position are Mondays and Thursdays 12:30-4:30pm. Mandatory Training will be held June 12th and 13th, which will include CPR if needed.

- Train with and report to Recreation Coordinator.
- Assure safety of up to 30 campers who are in your care at all times
- Assist with all aspects of the Tween Bike Camp programming including curricula review, revision and expansion
- Teach and assist with teaching scheduled games and lessons using existing curriculum
- Assist with procurement of all program supplies
- Learn and assist with teaching how to ride, basic bike mechanics, and safe riding skills
- Manage behavior of campers and report camper conduct to Bike Camp Coordinator or parent/guardian as necessary
- Maintain daily attendance reports
- Lead and/or support bike rides ranging from 1 mile to 15 miles in length in summer weather
- Organize group activities and team-building exercises
- Provide engagement, humor, and positive spirits as a role model for the campers
- High school diploma or equivalent required; ages 18 or older preferred
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified, or willing to obtain a certification at training.
- Must be able to provide a working bike and helmet
- 0-2 years of experience working with youth, preferably in a summer camp environment or similar
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check
- Must be able to ride a bike in city traffic with competence and confidence enough to pay attention to the actions and well-being of other riders. Must have the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
- Understanding of and ability to communicate safe biking practices
- Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather, including extreme heat
- Must be able to ride a bike for up to 15 miles at a time
- Must be able to see and hear in order to observe and communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand
