A thriving Highway 74 Corridor is where most major restaurants, hotels, and shopping are found. The City of Monroe is also home to the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport.

The City of Monroe operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council sets policies and enacts ordinances, which are carried out under the City Manager's direction. The City Council is comprised of an elected Mayor and six council members. The City has approximately 500 Full-time and 200 Part-Time employees within the following department: Administration, Communications and Tourism, Downtown and Facilities Maintenance, Economic Development, Energy Services, Engineering, Finance, Fire Department, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Police Department, and Water Resources.

The City of Monroe provides full-time employees an excellent fringe benefit package including 401(k), medical and dental insurance, prescription drug card, retirement, life insurance, short-term disability, sick leave, and many other group employee benefits. In addition: six (6) month successful probation with 5% increase in salary, Christmas bonus based on hire date, Performance Pay, Cost of Living Adjustments as approved by City Council, wellness incentives, fourteen (14) paid holidays and tuition reimbursement.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs intermediate semiskilled work providing services to airport customers; assisting in the maintenance and operation of the airport; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Airport Operations Supervisor.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, crawling, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication (speaking and hearing) is required for expressing or exchanging information, ideas, or hazard warnings by normal and loud spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small particles, use of measuring devices, gauges, removal and reassembly of equipment parts at or within arms’ length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing the general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, wind, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and fuels.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Directing arriving aircraft to proper parking position on the airport ramp; assisting pilots and customers; taking fuel orders and performing minor aircraft maintenance as requested. Moves and parks aircraft in assigned locations with tractors and tow bars, performing any necessary service. Prepares aircraft for flight by pulling from hangar or parking space with aircraft tow tractor, adding required fuel and/or oil, adjusting air pressure in tires, cleaning windshield, removing covers, or other special requests. Assists airline staff and customers; provides directions, luggage assistance, rental assistance, etc.; escorts outside contractors as needed. Completes required paperwork for fuel purchases legibly and accurately. Performs other flight line services such as connecting and disconnecting ground power unit, servicing lavatories, standing fire watch when starting engines, directing aircraft on departure from ramp, etc. Assists in keeping facility clean of trash, dirt, debris. Operates ground service equipment such as tow tractors, aircraft refueling trucks, ground power units. Responsible for learning, understanding, and following established safe work practices and fuel quality control procedures. Observes all safety, environmental, and general housekeeping rules and policies. Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of safe aviation ground procedures; general knowledge of aviation fueling procedures and safety precautions; general knowledge of special procedures and processes in towing aircraft; general knowledge of airport operational methods, procedures, equipment and facilities; general knowledge of airport, fire and safety precautions and specialized emergency procedures; strong communication skills required to interface with customers and employees; ability to maintain basic records; ability to make simple arithmetic computations; ability to deal with the public in a courteous, tactful, patient, and friendly manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, associates and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and minimal experience in the operation and maintenance of motorized equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Aircraft pilot training or aircraft mechanic training desirable.
