The City of Monroe has a population of 36,392, and is the county seat of Union County. The historic Victorian Courthouse, built in 1886, sits magnificently atop a central square and draws attention from every direction. To the north lie County and City government buildings - to the south, quaint downtown shops, restaurants and businesses. Several fountains and small park areas are part of the downtown landscape. A thriving Highway 74 Corridor is where most major restaurants, hotels, and shopping are found. The City of Monroe is also home to the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport.

The City of Monroe operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council sets policies and enacts ordinances, which are carried out under the City Manager's direction. The City Council is comprised of an elected Mayor and six council members. The City has approximately 500 Full-time and 200 Part-Time employees within the following department: Administration, Communications and Tourism, Downtown and Facilities Maintenance, Economic Development, Energy Services, Engineering, Finance, Fire Department, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Police Department, and Water Resources.

The City of Monroe provides full-time employees an excellent fringe benefit package including 401(k), medical and dental insurance, prescription drug card, retirement, life insurance, short-term disability, sick leave, and many other group employee benefits. In addition: six (6) month successful probation with 5% increase in salary, Christmas bonus based on hire date, Performance Pay, Cost of Living Adjustments as approved by City Council, wellness incentives, fourteen (14) paid holidays and tuition reimbursement.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs responsible human support work assisting with summer camp program activities; does related work as required. Camp Counselors are seasonal employees and will begin work in June and end in August. Work is performed under the supervision of the Day Camp Director and Assistant Day Camp Director.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, operation of equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and noise. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Assisting with the summer day camp program and providing a positive summer camp participant experience. Supervises children enrolled in summer day camp activities. Ensuring of facility operations. Ensures safety procedures are adhered to during program activities. Assist with activities such as arts and crafts, indoor games, table games and outdoor events. Performs general custodial duties as required. Performs related task as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of child care practices and techniques; general knowledge of children's developmental and social growth expectations and needs; general knowledge of health, safety and first aid practices, methods and techniques; skill in working with children; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with parents, staff, associates and program participants.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, attending high school or work permit and must be 16 years of age or older. Some experience is recreational programming preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic First Aid certifications or preferred within 3 months of employment. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Must be flexible with working times between 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.
