    BENEFITS

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs intermediate skilled and semi-skilled locksmith work in the repair, alteration, installation and keying of manual and electronic locking systems on facilities and equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the maintenance crew leader.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently; Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms’ length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Performs skilled and semi-skilled locksmith work maintaining and repairing of manual and electronic locking systems in facilities and equipment. Installs locking systems such as doors, door hardware, closures, panic hardware, changes lock combinations, security bolts, etc. in facilities; ensures operating condition. Cuts new or duplicate keys for city buildings. Makes measurements and cuts materials to exact specification for placement of locks. Knowledge of manual and electronic locking systems to assist with troubleshooting and repairs. Diagnoses operational problems in locks and systems. Inspects facilities, systems and components to identify necessary repairs and provide maintenance. Performs minor repair and modifications to doors and doorframes to maintain proper closing and security. Re-keys locks and changes combinations. Coordinates with staff to complete projects and work orders efficiently. Maintains tools and equipment. Inventories and orders locks and keys and related equipment and supplies; prepares specifications and obtains quotes as needed. Maintains and uses confidential key and core data and assigned key tracker to create, change and install locking equipment, and lock cores and to cut, issue, and assign keys. Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Through knowledge of practices and tools related to the skilled locksmith work and maintenance including appropriate codes; through knowledge of manual and electronic locks and security systems, equipment and fixtures; working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of locking systems and equipment; through knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of locksmith work and other trades required of the position; through knowledge and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments. Ability to maintain routine records and reports; ability to observe and follow oral and written directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED and general knowledge of locksmith techniques or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Completion of Vocational Training in Locksmith.
