Detailed Work Activities
Under general supervision, the Service Worker I performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance on the City’s water distribution system, storm water system, streets, parks, and cemeteries, including buildings and equipment.
Street Division: Sweeps and/or shovel or pick-up rubbish and debris from City streets, gutters, and sidewalks, cemeteries, parks, and around other City facilities and properties; excavates cemetery graves, installs footers, and performs other general maintenance; assists in concrete repair and replacement of catch basin curb, sidewalks, drive approaches, manholes; performs leaf collections on City streets, parks, cemeteries, and around other City facilities and properties, and mows grass, trim trees and weed eats sidewalks and right-of-ways; installs, repairs and maintains street signs and sign posts; make minor repairs and replacements to traffic lights; repairs potholes; erects raised traffic bars, guardrails and installs reflectors; participates in snow removal and ice control; assists in Utilities Division activities as assigned.
Utilities Division: Cleans and assists in televising storm sewers and main lines; makes concrete repairs and replacement of catch basin curbs, sidewalks, drive approaches, and manholes assuring compliance with policies and procedures of the City; assists in repairing, servicing and maintenance of taps, mains, water lines, fire hydrants, and service boxes; reads water meters and records readings; collects and analyzes water samples from the distribution system; shuts off service to delinquent accounts; assists in Street Division activities as assigned.
Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment; washes, cleans vehicles; cleans and oils equipment and tools; informs supervisor of lost or missing, damaged, or unserviceable or otherwise unsafe vehicle, equipment or tool.
Attends meetings and serves on committees, as required; attends various meetings, seminars, and workshops.
Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance; ability to get along with others; may be required to work extra hours, evening hours, overnight, weekends and/or holidays as necessary; due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Service Worker I must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so, to handle maintenance and/or safety issues that arise.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED); or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver’s license. Must remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy. Must maintain Class A CDL license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: City goals and objectives;* City policies and procedures;* two-way radio operations; water distribution systems construction, maintenance, and repair; grounds maintenance and repair; English grammar and spelling.
Skill in: Mechanics; painting; motor vehicle operation; pipe fitting; use of bench and/or hand tools; use of mechanics’ tools and equipment.
