The City of Monterey Park seeks to fill a Battalion Chief position for the Fire Department. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, this position will serve as one of the four Battalion Chiefs charged with administration or emergency operations, as well as oversight and management of assigned divisional responsibilities. This can include fiscal monitoring of the department's budget; program development and implementation, promotion of community involvement, assistance with establishing division goals and objectives or any other task assigned by Fire Chief. Battalion Chief's shall work a 48 / 96 Shift (Operations BC) or 40-hour Shift (Administration BC).
Duties may include planning, organizing, and directing programs and activities of the Fire Department; taking incident command of personnel, apparatus and other resources in response to fire and emergency medical service calls; assists in the development and administration of departmental rules, regulations, procedures, and policies, departmental budget, performance standards, tactics, and training programs; recommends and initiates division purchases; prepares, detailed reports on department activities and conduct special studies; assumes major responsibility for staff functions and activities, such as personnel administration and training.

The city is a full-service City, providing its own fire, police, library, parks and recreation, water service, and infrastructure maintenance.
The gateway to the San Gabriel Valley, Monterey Park is located seven miles east of downtown Los Angeles and encompasses an area of 7.72 square miles with approximately 60,269 residents and an additional daytime population of more than 20,000 as a result of the student population at the local community college and business employers in the city.
The city consists primarily of suburban residential neighborhoods balanced by commercial facilities. It is bordered by three major freeways : the San Bernardino (10), Long Beach (710) and Pomona (60) freeways; and the City offers many economic and cultural advantages. Upcoming development projects will provide new growth in retail, hotels, jobs, and economic support to the city.
Several critical infrastructures in the city are the Metropolitan Water District Reservoir that is a major feeder line to Long Beach, the Southern California CHP Headquarters, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Headquarters.
The Fire Department
The Fire Department is comprised of 59 full-time and part-time sworn and non-sworn employees who pride themselves on serving the community with the highest quality and level of standard care in emergency response and community services.
The Department is organized into five divisions : Administration, Fire Prevention, Operations, Training, Fire Prevention / Code Enforcement and Community Risk Reduction. The Department also manages and operates an OES Strike Team engine, USAR unit, and management of the City's Emergency Operations Center. Knowledge of modern methods of fire department administration; local, state, and national safety codes, ordinances, and laws relating to fire fighting and prevention, building materials, and construction methods, arson laws, arrest procedures, court procedures and evidence control; principles of combustion; geography and demographics of the City, major fire hazards, water supply in the City; procedures of fire and arson investigations, principles of public administration, budgeting, supervision, training, personnel and municipal government; new developments in techniques and equipment used in modern firefighting, fire prevention, equipment, maintenance, and drill procedures.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Public or Business Administration, or related field; and
- Five years of fire suppression and prevention experience, including three years as a Fire Captain or company commander.
Applicants without a bachelor's degree or stated years of experience are to submit supplemental information regarding the "equivalent combination of education & experience" to assist in determining qualifications.
