The current vacancy is in the Adult Services division. This position works a rotating Monday-Friday, and Tuesday-Saturday schedule, including occasional evenings. Candidates who are successful in the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list. This list may be used to fill future vacancies in other divisions of the library.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general direction of the Senior Librarian, performs professional library services in one or more assigned areas of the Library. Major duties include reference work; reader’s advisory; collection development; programs and events for all ages; and supporting library patrons in the use of library materials, technology and library services; and performs related duties as required.

Education / Experience / Training :
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university is required.
One year of experience in public library services is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of professional library work; reference sources including electronic formats; current authors, titles, and readership interest levels; methods, rules and procedures involved in the classification and cataloging of materials.
Ability to interpret and determine patron needs; locate desired resources; use independent judgement; communicate effectively both orally in one-on-one situations, in front of groups, and in writing; supervise and direct the activities of assigned staff; assess community needs, popular interests, and social trends through direct and anecdotal methods; establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different backgrounds, varying degrees of English expertise and different age groups.
Licenses and Certifications :
Possession of valid Class C California Driver’s License.

Physical Demands : Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position requires finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination to operate computer hardware and standard office equipment and reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level. The employee occasionally lifts, pulls, and carries records, documents and books typically weighing up to 20 pounds; and pushes or pulls book carts weighing up to 200 pounds. Additionally, sensory demands include the ability to talk and hear. The position requires near and far vision and ability to adjust focus in reading written materials and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. Ability to respond quickly to the scene of an accident / incident and to identify safety hazards in the workplace.
Mental Demands : While performing the duties of this class, the employee must be able to use written and oral communication skills; read, analyze, and interpret data, materials, and documents; prepare and evaluate reports; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new information or new skills; and interact with City staff, community members and the public.
Work Environment : The employee works in an office environment with controlled temperature settings. The employee may need to be in outside elements for special events, programs, and other related job duties.
