Description of Work

The City of Monticello is currently accepting applications for summer and summer / fall seasonal employees for our Parks Department. Full-time and part-time positions are available May-October. This posting will remain open until all positions are filled.

General Statement of Duties : The work involves a variety of duties ranging from unskilled manual labor to skilled mechanical work in the operation and maintenance of small 4-wheel tractors and mowing equipment.

Supervision Received : Works under the general supervision of the Park Superintendent.

Supervision Exercised : None.

Typical Duties Performed

Operate a variety of power-operated tools, equipment, and vehicles engaged in the on-going maintenance and repair on City parks and other public properties.
Perform a variety of manual and skilled tasks, including mowing and trimming of grass and bushes, picking up litter and emptying trash cans.
Operate small tractors for the purpose of mowing and grading.
Operate a gasoline engine driven string trimmer and push mowers.
Repair and maintain playground equipment and related amenities.
Grading and leveling lime-walking paths.
Sports field set-ups.
Repair and maintain as well as replace broken posts and signs.
Miscellaneous painting and staining.
Sweeping walks and parking areas.
Wood chipping.
Cleaning and maintaining restrooms as necessary.
Watering trees and grass.
Lifting and moving of picnic tables and related park equipment.
Operating a City pickup truck.
Maintain small tractors, string trimmers, push mowers, and related equipment. Also involves washing and cleaning, oil changes, greasing, replacement of broken parts and adjustments, including the sharpening of mower blades.
Other tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Moderate to considerable knowledge of the principles of operation and servicing of light equipment and power tools.

Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in light equipment operation.

Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in light equipment operation.

Knowledge of practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of the parks system.

Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.

Knowledge of setup fields for sports play.

Ability to perform minor painting and carpentry tasks incidental to other assignments.

Ability to perform manual labor associated with the ongoing care and maintenance of the parks system.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications.

Ability to communicate and work effectively with the general public in the park systems.

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is mainly outside involving exposure to all weather conditions.

The work requires exposure to workplace hazards such as chemical and fume exposure from equipment operation and chemical application. Noise exposure due to equipment operation. Additional hazards related to exposure to dust, potential electrical shock and extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, hail and wind.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB

Hear and speak effectively to communicate in person or by phone with city staff and the public.

Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.

Use large motor skills to perform manual and maintenance work, involving regular standing, walking, bending, moderately heavy to heavy lifting and carrying, twisting, turning, climbing and maintaining balance, crouching, standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, working at heights of over 10 feet and pushing and pulling.

Frequently reach with hands and arms and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls.

Lift up to 50 pounds.

Minimum and Desirable Qualifications

A high school education or GED equivalent.

A valid Class D Minnesota driver's license with safe driving record.

Seasonal and temporary employees are eligible for paid sick and safe leave.
