Under general direction, performs chemical, biochemical, biological, bacteriological and microbiological analyses on water/wastewater samples of both solids and liquids in support of the efficient operation of the wastewater treatment plant laboratory. Oversees all aspects of the laboratory and its performance while maintaining high quality control and quality assurance requirements. Maintains a safe work environment.

Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.

- Prepare test materials and laboratory analyses on water/wastewater samples. Compile and record data. Perform and interpret analyses and complete reports on procedures. Manage multiple tasks within a given time frame to ensure accurate results.
- Perform quality assurance and quality control on all aspects of the wastewater laboratory.
- Solve technical problems related to the analysis of water and wastewater and monitors quality control of lab tests.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on lab equipment. Calibrate lab instruments as needed to ensure plant processes meet wastewater treatment NPDES discharge permit requirements as well as other standards set by state, federal and local laws and regulations.
- Make recommendations for the purchase of equipment and chemicals. Ensure that there is a sufficient supply of materials and supplies for lab operation.
- Prepare technical reports as required. Establish laboratory processes and procedures.
- Follow work safety procedures, methods and forms. Follow quality control/quality assurance protocols and participates in quality assurance and safety programs, preventative maintenance and similar training.
- Maintain state and federal certification standards set for the practice of water laboratory sciences.
- Maintain current field of knowledge on current laws and policies that govern a safe and efficient wastewater treatment facility.
- Conduct informative tours in a professional and courteous manner.

- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Microbiology or related field from an accredited college.
- Extensive experience in water/wastewater chemistry laboratory techniques and analyses.
- Knowledge of State, Federal and Local laws and regulations, microbiology, workings of the industrial pretreatment program, laboratory and plant operating procedures, and sample preservation.
- This position is subject to non-standard working hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Level I Water Quality Analyst Certification.
- Class A wastewater operators certification as issued by the State of Colorado.
- Current Colorado drivers license with acceptable driving record.
