Park Technician

The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for a Park Technician in the Public Works Department. This semiskilled position performs intermediate work inspecting, repairing, replacing, maintaining and operating park equipment and facilities, preparing, installing and maintaining park grounds and structures, and related work as required. 

HOURS: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm. Flexibility. 40 hours per week
HIRING RANGE: $24.65 to $25.67. ($51,276 to $53,403). The full salary range is $24.65 to $34.93  ($51,276 to $72,669)

SALARY INCREASES:  Receive a salary increase on your anniversary date each year.
Additionally, receive a 6% COLA increase in January 2026 and a 6% COLA increase in January 2027 per Union contract.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the Park Technician include, but are not limited to the following major duties performed. Duties are listed from most to least important.

  • Repairs and replaces park equipment and facilities including park shelters, playground equipment, ice/hockey rinks, warming houses, swimming pools and irrigation systems.
  • Handles the opening of City operated pools; operates and maintains swimming pools; checks and records chemical levels for pools; makes adjustments as required.
  • Repairs and replaces pool pumps, chemical controllers, filters, valves, heaters and water lines, etc.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems as needed.
  • Maintains athletic fields; lines fields; installs hockey boards and posts and flood rink areas.
  • Installs, inspects and repairs playground equipment.
  • Installs, equipment and supplies such as tennis court lights and nets and picnic tables in park areas.
  • Installs fixtures and completes cement finishing, electrical, carpentry, plumbing tasks, roofing and painting to construct and maintain structures for park facilities.
  • Performs safety checks on shop equipment, park maintenance vehicles and specialized turf care equipment.
  • Maintains parking lots, park grounds and bike trails; shovels snow, mows grass, trims edges and repairs bike trails.
  • Applies chemicals for weed control.
  • Operates equipment including tractors, bobcat, snow blower, high arm, dump trucks, chain saws, grinders, etc.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To perform the Park Technician successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.

Education and Experience
        • High school diploma or GED
        • One year experience in construction and maintenance, or related field

Training, Certificates, and Licenses

  • Valid commercial driver's license with Class B air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire (training provided)
  • Minnesota Pool Operator and/or Playground Inspector Certificate within 6 months of hire (training provided)
  • Minnesota Certified Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months of hire (training provided)
  • Tanker endorsement within one year of hire (training provided)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
The Park Technician must have thorough knowledge of the type and uses of tools, supplies, equipment, procedures and techniques used in maintenance, repair and construction activities; thorough knowledge of minor maintenance of small gasoline powered equipment; thorough knowledge of various maintenance and manual tasks involved in carpentry cement finishing, plumbing and electrical work; thorough knowledge in the use of common hand and power tools; thorough knowledge of the safe operation and preventive maintenance of facilities and equipment; ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance manuals, polices, procedures, technical documents and diagrams; ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods of time; ability to work under varied climatic conditions; ability to maintain effective working relations with associates and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to vibration, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
