Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
This position performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in park maintenance and equipment operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist full-time staff and other seasonal staff with park maintenance and repairs.
- Operate large rotary turf mowers and small trim mowers.
- General service maintenance of mower equipment.
- Mow all city parks, street beautification sites, and other city facility sites.
- Perform tasks related to shoreline cleanup and management plan.
- Assist full-time staff with city-wide chipper recycling program.
- Assist with new park development, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
- Operate small power equipment such as string trimmers, blowers, walk-behind lawn mowers, and small electric power tools.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs on buildings such as painting, graffiti removal, and washing outside building walls.
- Assist with setting up and taking down equipment for special events.
- Must wear approved and proper work attire to follow safe working procedures and guidelines.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Skill in operating various sized lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, and small electric power tools.
- Knowledge of general service maintenance and repair techniques for lawn equipment.
- Ability to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Parks Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of operating various lawn mowers and other yard care equipment and electric power tools.
- The purpose of this position is to maintain the lawns at city-owned parks and facilities and perform minor maintenance and repair of outside facility walls.

- Contacts are typically with coworkers and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency and experience which provides sufficient knowledge to competently perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the essential functions of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for three to five years.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License at time of hire.
