The Full-Time Firefighter position is responsible for preserving life and property by responding to service calls for fires, rescues, and other emergency calls. Assists with maintenance and operation of equipment, housing inspections, daily equipment checks, building maintenance, record keeping, and training preparation. Applicants are required to possess a high school diploma, State of Michigan Firefighter Training Council Firefighter Levels I and II certification, Incident Command Training, Operations Level Hazardous Materials Certification, and current American Heart Association CPR certification. The following certifications and training are preferred: Fire Officer I, II, III certification, Hazardous Materials Technician Certification, active Michigan Licensed Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Michigan Firefighters Training Council drivers training, and technical rescue certification in any or all of the following disciplines: ropes, surface water, rapid water, confined space, trench collapse, and/or structural collapse.
Selected external candidates must successfully pass the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or within the previous twelve-month period have passed the CPAT or an equivalent physical agility test.
The standard working hours are 24 hours on with 48 hours off with the shift beginning at 8 a.m. and ending the following day at 8 a.m. All Full-Time Firefighters must reside and maintain their principal domicile within the limits of Isabella County or within 20 miles from the nearest City limit, whichever is greater.
Starting hourly rate is $18.35 with an increase to $20.36 per hour after 18 months of employment. Skill based pay up to $1,750 annually is also available for Fire Officer certification. Current City of Mt. Pleasant Paid On-Call Firefighters are eligible to receive up to a $10,000 hiring bonus based on average run response rate in your last five years of service.

The City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
