DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, performs fire suppression, rescue activities, responds to hazardous material releases, performs public education activities; performs routine fire station and equipment maintenance duties, participates in training activities; performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Responds to fire, motor vehicle accident, rescue, civil defense, hazardous material emergencies, medical emergencies and natural disaster calls to prevent or extinguish fires, rescue victims and assist those in need.
- Rescues victims in life threatening situations; climbs ladders, ropes, stairs, hills, etc., using various equipment to gain access to and rescue victims.
- Drives fire apparatus to scene; operate equipment.
- Lays, connects, and advances fire hoses; directs water stream to control and extinguish fires and protect exposures.
- Provides emergency medical care.
- Assists in the maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.
- Cleans fire hoses, tools and other equipment.
- Performs general fire station and other equipment maintenance; makes minor equipment repairs, sweeps and mops floors, washes windows, cleans furniture and facilities, paints buildings, etc.
- Assists with preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Attends classroom and psychomotor skills training.
- Performs public relations in the community as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- No work experience requirements.
- Must possess valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of modern firefighting principles, methods and techniques used in fire suppression, prevention, hazardous materials and rescue, emergency medical care and hazardous materials.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of fire vehicles, firefighting and rescue equipment, and related apparatus.
- Knowledge of the federal, state and local laws and ordinances, including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, pertaining to fire prevention, suppression, hazardous materials and rescue.
- Knowledge of the geography of the City of Murray, including the location of streets and roads, fire hydrants, and the location and interior plans of major buildings.

- : Work involves sitting, standing, stooping, walking; extreme physical demands at scene of emergencies for long periods of time; lifting heavy objects (more than 100 pounds); exposed to extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time; exposed to high places, confined spaces, noise, machinery and its moving parts, fumes, chemicals and toxic substances must have excellent hearing and vision; must be able to wear a respirator.

Must achieve IFSAC Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2, and Hazardous Materials Operations certification within the first year of employment. Possession of Emergency Medical Technician is preferred but not required.
