Position Title: Entry Level Firefighter
The City of Mustang is currently recruiting for Entry Level Firefighter.
Salary Information: $44,670- $46,766 - based on qualifications
Benefit Information: Health, dental, vision, and life insurance benefits, Oklahoma Firefighter Pension, admin leave upon hire and accrued vacation and sick leave after successful probationary period.

Department Overview:
Mustang Fire Department was established in 1969 and is located in Canadian County, Oklahoma. Mustang Fire Department is responsible for covering the corporate city limits of Mustang which totals 12 square miles and contains a population of 23,270. Mustang Fire Department answers over 2400 calls for service annually. Being located within the City of Oklahoma City, Mustang has an automatic aid agreement with OKCFD, as well as, mutual aid agreements with other neighboring communities. Mustang Fire Department is part of the Canadian County Wildland Task Force, which deploys across the State as requested. MFD is currently comprised of 24 operational staff and 3 administrative staff. MFD takes pride in its first response ALS pre-hospital care operating under individual protocols through 11 paramedics and 7 AEMT personnel. MFD houses 3 engines, 1 100’ heavy- duty ladder, 1 water tender, 1 rescue, 3 brush pumpers, 1 battalion vehicle, and 1 command vehicle. MFD deploys these resources out of two stations. Operational members are staffed under a three- platoon system (Red, Blue, Green shifts) and work 24hrs on, 24hrs off, 24hrs on, 24hrs off, 24hrs on, 96hrs off.

Necessary Certifications : National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (Basic)
Additional Requirements :

  • IFSAC/ProBoard Firefighter I and II preferred

  • Obtain IFSAC/ProBoard Firefighter I and II within one year of employment

  • NREMT- Paramedic preferred

  • Candidate will be required to attend Paramedic school at a date and time set forth by the Fire Chief

  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and be insurable

  • Must be able to pass a rigid background check, mental health assessment, and polygraph

  • Current valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or must be able to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

  • Must meet the medical requirements of the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension (age 45 max)
Hiring Process : Complete application packet with required documentation, interview panel, (an optional) but highly recommended-applicant 8 hour ride out for those selected to proceed through the process, Fire Chief’s Interview, conditional job offer and successfully passing background, polygraph, psychological testing, CPAT, pension physical and drug screen for safety sensitive positions.
Job Summary :
Under the direct supervision of a Fire Officer, fights fires, provides emergency medical services, and response to other emergency incidents to save lives and property. Performs related prevention, education, and support activities.

Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Under the direction of a Fire Officer, responds to all alarms and calls to which their company is assigned, operates firefighting and other emergency response equipment, and aids in protection of life and property.

2. Rides fire truck, lays and connects hoses to hydrants.

3. Directs fire streams and extinguishes fire in a variety of situations including residential dwellings, commercial buildings, grass fires and aircraft crashes.

4. Performs various rescue and medical assistance duties including removing victims from occupancies filled with heat, smoke or toxic gases and freeing victims from trapped vehicles.

5. Administers first aid to victims as required.

6. Acts as a vehicle driver when assigned by supervisor. May act as relief driver in the absence of the Apparatus Operator.

7. Assists in the inspection of firefighting apparatus and the maintenance and upkeep of equipment in order to ensure proper operation, and reports any mechanical failures to supervisor.

8. Attends training and drill sessions to receive instructions in all aspects of firefighting. Participates in all training, pre-planning and all other programs as assigned.

9. Within the first year of employment, learns all phases of Fire, EMS, and Emergency Response practices and performs these to the best of his training and capabilities. Keeps abreast of Firefighting, EMS, and Emergency Response techniques, current and new.

10. Performs salvage and overhaul as required.

11. Participates in pre-fire planning and fire prevention activities.

12. Responsible for routine maintenance and upkeep of fire station, grounds, and equipment.

13. Assists in public education activities as necessary.

14. Maintain a high level of physical fitness.

15. Shows proper respect to supervisors.

16. Follows all orders.

17. Performs other functions as assigned and other duties as required.


OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS
This classification is a “safety-sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a “safety-sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.


DIFFICULTY OF WORK
Tasks are skilled in nature requiring a thorough knowledge of emergency response procedures and equipment usage. Work is standardized following established procedures.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS
Employee often comes in contact with the public in stressful situations and during pre-fire planning, fire prevention, and public education activities. Worker shares living quarters with other fire department personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Employee is based at an assigned station and works a 24 hour shift an average of 9 days per month. Worker engages directly in firefighting, rescue, and emergency response activities and is therefore intermittently subject to severe job hazards and mental stress.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Employee must perform functions that are physically and psychologically very demanding. Moderate to heavy physical activity is required during firefighting and other emergency responses, equipment maintenance and training activities. Emergency response duties include functions that require the employee to work at near maximal heart rate for prolonged periods of time. The required use of heavy protective equipment (including respirators) and exposure to hostile environments (i.e. heat from a fire) contribute to this physical load. Environmental factors the employee is exposed to and essential functions performed by the employee at emergency incidents include:

a. Operate both as a member of a team and independently at incidents of uncertain duration.

b. Spend extensive time outside exposed to the elements.

c. Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing duties. Must perform physically demanding work in hot (up to 400°F), humid (up to 100%) atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body cooling mechanisms.

d. Experience frequent transition from hot to cold and humid to dry atmospheres.
e. Work in wet, icy, or muddy areas.

f. Perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as on roof tops or from ladders.

g. Wear personal protective equipment that weighs approximately 50 pounds while performing other tasks.

h. Perform physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment with 1.5 inches of water column resistance to exhalation at a flow to 40 liters per minute.

i. Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.

j. Exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims.

k. Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods.

l. Operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.

m. Use manual and power tools in the performance of duties.

n. Rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potentially life threatening environment throughout the duration of the operation.

o. Operates automatic transmission vehicles.

p. Work in areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries is possible.

q. Face exposure to carcinogenic dust such as asbestos, toxic substances, such as hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact.

r. Face exposure to infectious agents such as Hepatitis B, HIV, or Tuberculosis.

s. Perform complex physical and mental tasks during life threatening emergencies.

t. Ability to use a two-way radio in a clear, concise manner.

u. Face life or death decisions during emergency conditions.
