Electrician
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled journeyman level electrical work to install and maintain electrical systems for the City.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Installs, removes, repairs, overhauls, and tests electrical equipment, both alternating and direct current, such as power circuits, lighting systems, switch gears, transformers, starters, controllers, capacitors, production equipment, power and control systems, electrical receptacles and switches, electronic power, control, and communication equipment.
- Maintains electrical lines and auxiliary equipment, such as transformers, conductors, and capacitors; inspects electrical systems in accordance with preventive maintenance schedules; tests and repairs electrical systems and alarms; tests and inspects generators; inspects pump station controls, tools, and equipment; replaces light bulbs and fixtures; maintains related documentation.
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and corrects electrical problems in distribution, electrical equipment, and lighting systems; determines course of action; selects proper equipment; fabricates metal parts; performs needed repairs and mechanical work.
- Ensures that operation, construction, and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards: conducts inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Determines amount of materials needed to complete projects and gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies; monitors inventory levels and initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.
- Inspects/tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations: makes adjustments, repairs or replacements as appropriate; reports problem situations.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals: places safety cones, markers, or signs to alert employees/citizens of work areas or other potential hazards.
- Assists in coordinating work activities of laborers for some electrical projects; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, time sheets, maintenance checklists, work orders, maintenance records, inventory records, purchase orders or other documents.
- Receives various forms, lists, work orders, maintenance checklists, invoices, receipts, blueprints, architectural drawings, diagrams, maps, material safety data sheets, policies, procedures, operational guides, catalogs, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, City employees, contractors, vendors, the public, or other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Maintains an awareness of new policies, procedures, trends and advances in the profession; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate
- Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include a motor vehicle, utility truck, electrical tester, multi meter, electricians’ tools, router, testing instruments, measuring devices, carpentry tools, pneumatic tools, mechanic tools, cleaning supplies, or hand tools.
- Operates a personal computer, general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists with City-wide events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, requested and required.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Vocational or technical degree or MASC Electrical Master or Journeyman certification and two (2) years of experience in electrical work.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work. The employee is frequently required to apply 10 pounds of force to move objects. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires: balancing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing voices and distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, visual acuity in data/color/observations/operating equipment/inspect defects or measurements, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed sometimes indoors but mainly in the field where performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or bright/dim lights. Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
