Our Street Maintenance Division is seeking driven, dependable individuals to join the team as Street Maintenance Laborers (Seasonal Extra-Help)! We are looking for applicants that can work one of the following schedules on a seasonal extra-help basis:

  • Schedule 1: Consists of working weekdays from 6:30AM to 4:00PM (with rotating days off)
  • Schedule 2: Consists of working weekdays from 4:00AM to 12:30PM

Qualified applicants will have a record of demonstrating the following competencies:

Part-Time Extra Help positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable.

TYPICAL TASKS

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the maintenance tasks associated with the care of grounds, parking areas, streets, water, storm drains and other City property.

  • Cleans and removes debris and litter from landscapes, parking lots, streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, drainage ditches, sidewalks, and street construction sites by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.

  • May operate vehicles, and light equipment and power tools necessary to complete maintenance for the above assigned areas.

  • Assists in breaking up pavement, digging holes, cutting trenches, excavating and filling in holes in streets, pathways and other paved surfaces, by chipping, using sledgehammer, shovel, pick, spade, rake, hoe, hand tools or jackhammer as directed.

  • Assist in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.

  • Assists in setting up traffic control including signs and barricades and acts as flag person to direct traffic around work sites.

  • Helps repair and maintain walks and walkways, sidewalks, and gutters using hammer, saws, paint brushes and appropriate hand tools, spade, pick, hoe, shovels, tamper and jack hammer as directed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Functions, characteristics and proper use and care of common hand tools and safe work practices.

Ability to: Be trained in the use of supplies, tools, and equipment used in in the work areas as described above in a variety of weather conditions; Follow simple oral and written instructions; Perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking; Work safely in an environment containing dust and noise; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other persons; Work independently with little supervision.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent education

  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a good driving record is required.

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at time of at time of application.
