Library Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services Department
HOURS WORKED: 12 hours/week evenings and weekends
AFFILIATION: AFT LOCAL #4831
STARTING SALARY: Not to exceed $19.02/hr – Job Grade 3
PRIMARY DUTIES
Part-time customer service position at Nashua Public Library; schedule includes 3 evening shifts from 5-9 PM and some Sundays. The person in this position works regular shifts at a public service desk assisting customers in person, on the phone and via email. Direct customer services provided by this position include: readers advisory for youth and their caregivers, answering telephone calls and emails related to account support, assisting customers to place holds, helping customers use library technology, reserve meeting rooms and use associated technology as well as providing general information about library services. This position performs duties related to the circulation of library materials including assisting customers at our self-check kiosks and shelving library materials.
QUALIFICATIONS
BS/BA and 1 year of public library experience OR High School diploma or equivalent and three years of relevant experience required. Proficiency and experience with MS Office and demonstrated ability in using computers and helping others use technology. Must be able to learn new skills quickly and handle difficult situations with tact. The successful candidate will be able to work cooperatively as a team member as well as independently. The ability to work with a diverse public in a fast-paced environment is a must. Fluency in a second language is strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience providing a welcoming environment to both youth and adults is required, knowledge of children’s and teen literature is preferred. Must be able to push or pull carts; do a moderate amount of bending, squatting, lifting, stretching.
