THE POSITION:
Under general supervision, to perform difficult clerical and paraprofessional work in the library, including supervision of lower-level staff; prepare reports of library activities; assist patrons in the use of the library; and perform related duties as required.
Positions in this class perform paraprofessional-level duties in the Library and report to professional library staff. It is distinguished from the Librarian, which performs professional library duties supervising a section of the library. It is further distinguished from the Library Assistant by the performance of duties requiring a good knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to area of assignment and the use of initiative and independent judgment in selecting proper work methods, conducting transactions with the public, and solving routine problems based on knowledge gained through experience.
Key Responsibilities
Explains and demonstrates the use of catalogues, indexes, and other guides to library materials; performs copy cataloging and other simple classification of library materials; verifies classification of new materials to ensures consistency in classification with other Library materials; interprets MARC records and can add notes; experience with OCLC subject headings; responds to patron inquiries by telephone and in person and refers to appropriate staff member as necessary; operates automated circulation system; conducts story hours, puppet shows, craft projects, and presentations and performances at school assemblies and before parent/teacher groups, performs basic reference service; orders and receives library materials, checks materials received against orders, and reports discrepancies; supervises and trains lower-level staff; conducts tours of library and instructs the public on library use; writes monthly press releases promoting the library's collection and activities, flyers, bibliographies, signs, forms, and other materials; explains library policies and rules; arranges and maintains book displays, bulletin boards, and other exhibits; maintains library files and records; inputs and/or edits data into catalogues; operates a variety of office equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school; and two (2) years of full-time clerical and/or paraprofessional library work experience; or a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge and Skills in: Library terminology, procedures, and equipment; literature and standard books on various subject fields.
Ability to: Perform paraprofessional library work with speed and accuracy; operate automated systems; maintain records and files; use the Dewey Decimal System rapidly and accurately; follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple statistical reports; learn to operate and perform routine maintenance and cleaning of audio-visual equipment and materials; establish and maintain effective working relations with all levels of staff and the general public.
