WATER DISTRIBUTION LABORER
DEFINITION
The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of maintenance services for the Water Distribution department and related facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the Distribution & Maintenance Superintendent or Distribution & Maintenance Foreman. Exercises no supervision.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES—Important responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
1. Oversees and assists the works crews with the repair of water mains, service lines, meters and fire hydrants.
2. Operates equipment and power/hand tools to perform various water maintenance duties.
3. Installs new water mains, service lines, and meters.
4. Cleans, oils, and performs minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
5. Keeps work areas clean and orderly
Other Important Responsibilities and Duties
1. Performs snow removal details.
2. Maintains vehicles and equipment by changing the oil and checking fluids.
3. Inspects equipment.
4. Street repairs
5. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. Basic understanding of use of hand tools
2. Pipe repairs
3. Safety factors and the proper safety procedures.
4. Heavy equipment operation.
Ability to:
1. Adjust work schedule for emergency weather conditions.
2. Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
3. Pour concrete.
4. Repair streets.
5. Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
6. Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
7. Perform heavy manual labor.
8. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
9. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
10. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
11. Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Public Works Department.
12. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- Making observations

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
High School diploma or equivalent. Class-B Commercial Driver’s License.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions
Travel from site to site; field environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, odors, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.
Physical Conditions
Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may require maintaining a physical condition necessary for walking, standing, bending, pushing, crawling, crouching, and lifting heavy objects for prolonged periods of time; and the operation of motorized equipment and vehicles.
Tools and Equipment
Tractors, trucks, backhoes, skid loaders, dump trucks, locators, leak detectors, chop saws, rakes, shovels, jackhammers, and a variety of power and hand tools.
Miscellaneous Requirements
1. Must successfully complete pre-employment substance abuse testing.
2. Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
