BASIC FUNCTION

This position is an entry - level position with limited administrative responsibility. The City Planner will work on assigned tasks under the supervision and professional guidance of the Director and Chief Planner.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Update and maintain a system of basic planning data.
  2. Update and maintain a system of zoning enforcement data.
  3. Receives, documents, and investigates allegations of zoning non-compliance.
  4. Take and prepare draft minutes of the meetings of the commission and Board.
  5. Prepare docket sketches, maps and information packets for the Commission and Board.
  6. Prepare staff reports for dockets as assigned by the Director.
  7. Inspects properties to ensure compliance with Zoning Ordinance, including photographing reported violations.
  8. Perform research and provide technical support for any studies or planning being conducted and prepared by the planning staff as assigned by the Director.
  9. Assist the staff with thoroughfare program implementation, as assigned by the Director.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

  5. Manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  6. Work under pressure with time constraints in a changing environment.
  7. Frequent lifting or carrying of 10 pounds and on occasion may be required to lift up to 20 pounds.
  8. May stand or walk 1-4 hours per day.
  9. May sit 4-6 hours per day.
  10. Must use hands for repetitive fine manipulation.
  11. Occasional bending, kneeling, climbing, twisting, reaching and lifting.
  12. Vision correctable to 20/20.
  13. Provide a safe and healthy work environment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

  1. This position requires working in the internal environment.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING

  1. Minimum of a college or university degree in Planning or a closely related field.
  2. Preferred Master's degree in Planning or closely related field.
  3. Preferred completion of a planning internship program.
  4. Knowledge of the physical aspects of an urban environment, land development, planning methods and techniques, and general research methods.
  5. Ability to organize, formulate and execute planning studies and conduct basic research and analysis in a guided environment.
  6. Ability to communicate both orally and in written form.
  7. Ability to interface with clients, customers, diverse commissions, boards and associations in a professional and courteous manner.
  8. Valid driver's license.
  9. Experience in Microsoft Office products, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) required.
  10. Willingness to take on additional tasks as assigned.
