Under the supervision of the Recreation Program Specialist, the Field Supervisor is responsible for acting as a liaison between the softball players and the Umpires among other duties. This position oversees the softball field operations during the week and must have a strong grasp of the game and the rules, and should be able to step-in as an Umpire in the event of an Umpire not showing up to their scheduled games. The Field Supervisor will lay-out (prior to the first game) and remove (prior to the last game) the bases each night and is expected to closely monitor gameplay throughout each night. There will be only one Field Supervisor working each night, and they will be responsible for overseeing 1-3 fields.  

This position is not required to work every night of the week, but should be able to work at least one night per week for the entirety of the season. There may be an opportunity to work up to 4 nights per week. Depending on the amount of teams in each division, games are typically played at 6:10pm, 7:05pm, 8:00pm, and 9:00pm, with no games beginning after 10:00pm.

  • Set-up and take-down bases before and after games. 
  • Ensure the fields are playable and pose no safety risks to the players or staff.
  • Collect and organize score-sheets from Umpires and place in the Concession Stand.
  • Serve as a liaison between Softball Umpires and Team Captains should questions or problems arise.
  • Monitor the ball fields and open spaces before, during, and after games.
  • Enforce park rules and policies. 
  • Support the Umpires in their rulings and assist in diffusing tense situations.
  • Professionally represent the New Berlin Recreation Department.
  • Enforce rules and assist in rules clarification.
  • Assist the Umpire in observing, enforcing and explaining all game rules and regulations.
  • Help make decisions on any point not specifically covered in rules.
  • Invoke and impose penalties for violations of adopted rules.
  • Ensure a safe playing environment for participants. Includes inspecting sporting equipment (bats), mitigating poor player behavior, and monitoring field conditions.
  • Start and end games according to the schedule or weather cancellation policy.
  • Keep accurate scoring records and mark them on game sheets.
  • Report problems or needs to management.
  • Report to work at least 30 minutes prior to game-time and stay until the field is clear.
  • Attend all in-service training programs and be aware of all facility procedures.
  • Communicate equipment and/or supply needs with management.
  • All other duties as may be assigned.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to enforce the rules of Softball as designated.
  • Frequently required to stand, squat, stoop, and move for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, courteously and tactfully with participants, staff, city officials and the public.
  • Ability to present a positive image of the department and the City.
