PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Caretaker III role is an advanced position that involves skilled supervisory responsibilities in the care and maintenance of public parks and joint school playgrounds. This role requires hands-on participation in park maintenance tasks while also taking a leadership role in occasional guiding and coordinating the work of the crew.
The Caretaker III exercises a higher level of independent judgment in assigning tasks to crew members and making work-related decisions. They contribute to the overall upkeep of the parks and playgrounds, ensuring their safety, cleanliness, and functionality.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of park equipment and facilities. This may include inspecting equipment for damage, scheduling repairs, and ordering replacement parts.
- Lead the installation and maintenance of playground equipment; oversee the care of tennis courts; manage repairs to fence posts and backstops; collaborate with trades employees on construction and repair projects; maintain and repair park benches and furniture.
- Supervise and operate tractors, rotary equipment, and other grass-cutting machinery; operate various tools and light equipment; transport materials to and from job sites.
- Oversee and engage in tasks such as grass cutting, debris cleanup, leaf raking, shrubbery trimming, brush cutting, road patching, snow shoveling, and plowing to ensure safe and clean park conditions.
- Develop and implement maintenance plans for parks and playgrounds. This may involve identifying areas that need regular maintenance, setting priorities, and allocating resources.
- Guide the inspection and maintenance of park graffiti removal equipment.
- Work with other staff, sometimes from other departments to coordinate maintenance projects. This may involve communicating with other departments about project schedules, budgets, and safety requirements.
- Train and supervise seasonal employees and volunteers. This will involve providing training on safety procedures, equipment operation, and maintenance practices.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols by crew members, including the proper use of safety clothing and equipment.
- Maintain records as needed. This could involve summarizing maintenance activities, identifying areas for improvement, and making recommendations for future projects.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school and 5 to 7 years' experience in the use of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment; 5 to 7 years' experience in groundskeeping, including 3-5 years as a Caretaker for the City of New Haven.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a " General Fund ," tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 128, UPSEU.

General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of : a 120-day probationary period.
Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and / or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
