What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parking Enforcement Officer position at City of New Haven?
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is responsible traffic and parking enforcement work for the City of New Haven.
Work involves monitoring an assigned area to ensure compliance with parking ordinances and ticketing non-compliant vehicles. Work also includes assistance in traffic control and the enforcement of traffic laws pertaining to pedestrians as well as vehicular traffic. Work is performed with considerable independence according to ordinances and established policies. Work is reviewed and supervised by an administrative supervisor.
This position is a 40 hour work week and has varied rotating shifts that may include weekend and evening hours.
Internal only - Open only to current employees of the City of New Haven or BOE meeting minimum requirements.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enter and retrieve information pertaining to vehicle registration, identification, and status, using hand-held computers.
- Identify vehicles in violation of parking codes, checking with appropriate staff when necessary to confirm identities or to determine whether vehicles need to be booted or towed.
- Places tickets on illegally parked vehicles, such as at meters and in no parking or limited time parking zones and summons tow trucks when necessary.
- Assists in the enforcement of traffic and parking violations on an assigned shift in an assigned area.
- Patrol an assigned area by vehicle or on foot to ensure public compliance with existing parking ordinance.
- Makes arrangements for illegally parked or abandoned vehicles to be towed and directs tow-truck drivers to the correct vehicles.
- Performs traffic control work as directed, such as setting up barricades and temporary signs, placing bags on parking meters to limit their use, or directing traffic.
- Maintains records related to assigned work and makes daily reports.
- Provide information to the public regarding parking regulations and facilities, and the location of streets, buildings, and points of interest.
- Appear in court at hearings regarding contested traffic citations.
- Observe and report hazardous conditions, such as missing traffic signals or signs, and street markings that need to be repainted.
- Performs related work as required.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a " General Fund ," tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 884, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees .

General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of : a 90-day probationary period.
Selection Plan
