What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator position at City of New Iberia Municipal Civil Service?
Position is responsible for operations and maintenance of a municipal activated sludge waste water treatment plant, and includes trainee positions wherein incumbents must achieve state certification to work independently.
Representative Tasks: Monitors operations of the plant to assure proper treatment, no improper discharges, and for maintenance needs. Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance and cleaning as per specifications. Notifies shift supervisor when maintenance appears to require electrical or other contractors. Takes samples and makes adjustments in treatment processes. Attends training in safe operations and handling of hazardous materials such as chlorine and sulfide. Participates in drills to prepare for emergencies. Makes entries into records of treatment, discharges, maintenance. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications:
- Completion of high school or equivalent and literacy is required (verification of high school must be submitted with application).
- A valid Louisiana driver’s license are required. Must meet the general requirements of the City’s auto insurance company.
- Must be a qualified registered voter (verification must be submitted with application)
- Must pass the civil service exam, post-offer drug screen, physical, and functional pre-placement testing.
- Industry is regulated by the state, which requires certification of qualification by examinations in addition to education and experience so that Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Waste Water Treatment Class IV Certification is highly desired and is required for promotion to foreman and/or supervisor.
Difficulty: Work is characterized by mental demands of working rotating shift work of day & nights, weekends, and holidays.
Working Conditions: Frequent outdoor plant inspections, adjacent to raw wastewater and hazardous materials including pressurized chlorine gas as well as sulfide compounds.
Essential Functions: Normal mobility, manual dexterity and strength, are required to operate and maintain plant equipment, as are vision, hearing within normal limits. Positions require occasional heavy lifting, climbing, digging and exertion. Ability to lift up to 55 lbs. and work in confined spaces.
