- Reports directly to the Assistant Commissioner of Support Services, providing regular updates on operational status, challenges, and accomplishments within the fleet management area.
- Leads extensive special projects, including fleet upgrades, and other initiatives to enhance fleet performance throughout the assets’ lifespan.
- Ensures accurate, complete, and timely performance of all duties and tasks by subordinates within BME.
- Conducts regular performance reviews and supports the development of team members to improve efficiency and accountability.
- Provides supervisors with clear guidelines, priorities, and necessary information to achieve the Bureau’s objectives.
- Manages budgets for fleet operations, balancing cost efficiency with high standards of service.
- Establishes performance metrics and expectations, ensuring alignment with DSNY’s strategic goals.
- Continuously monitors workload, equipment trends, and operational needs, with a particular focus on equipment outages and fleet readiness.
- Ensures the accuracy and timeliness of reports, memos, and databases tracking fleet performance, using this information to make informed operational adjustments.
- Conducts physical facility inspections to ensure all maintenance and repair sites comply with Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) rules and regulations.
- Maintains documentation for compliance audits and takes corrective action as needed to adhere to regulatory standards.
- Implements and oversees ongoing trade and supervisory training programs, ensuring staff are equipped with current knowledge and skills.
- Identifies training needs, provides access to relevant courses, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement within the fleet management team.
Qualification Requirements
- Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto
years of which must have been at a supervisory level; or
- At least five years of experience as described in "1" above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or relevant education in an accredited college, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each 30 semester credits in college. However, all candidates must have the two years of supervisory experience described in "1" above.
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. For appointment to certain positions a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with no restrictions may be required. The Class B Commercial Driver License with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Preferred Skills
That the two (2) years of administrative or executive experience indicated in “specific qualifications required” be directly related to a large-scale motor vehicle repair and maintenance operation in the public sector. Knowledge of various automotive trades familiarity with NYC rules and regulations concerning personnel and management targets. Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office with expertise in Word and Excel, Outlook, and SMART. Good communication and demonstrated writing skills.
