Job Description:
The City of Newark Law Director’s Office is seeking a full-time Assistant Law Director in the Criminal Division. Under direction of the Law Director, the Assistant Law Director provides support to the Law Director, the City of Newark and contractual jurisdictions within Licking County. This position involves assisting in legal research, drafting legal documents, prosecuting criminal cases in the Licking County Municipal Court, and other duties as required and/or assigned.
Examples of Duties:
Legal Research and Analysis:
· Conduct legal research on a variety of topics including local, state and federal laws, statutes, regulations, case law, and court decisions.
Litigation Support:
· Assist in the prosecution of criminal cases for the City of Newark and contractual jurisdictions, including pre-trial negotiations, trials and appeals.
· Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents required for criminal prosecution.
· Conduct depositions, gather evidence, and interview witnesses as needed.
Compliance and Risk Management:
· Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements and mitigate legal risks.
· Monitor changes in laws and regulations that may affect the City of Newark and advise on necessary adjustments.
Training and Education:
· Stay updated on legal developments and trends relevant to municipal law and share knowledge with colleagues.
· Maintain required Supreme Court CLE mandates
Special Projects:
· Assist in special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Law Director.
Typical Qualifications:
· Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
· Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio
· Member in good standing with the Supreme Court of Ohio
· Must pass BCI background check
· Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations affecting municipalities.
· Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills.
· Strong oral and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, officials, and the public.
· Strong commitment to justice
· Proficient in the use of legal research tools and office software.

Compensation:
