General Job Summary:

We are looking for candidates that are interested in becoming Heavy Equipment Operators. If you have your CDL class ‘A’ or ‘B’ and want to learn how to operate our various heavy equipment, this position may be for you! Our Heavy Equipment Operator will work to assist with the street’s maintenance activities of the Public Works Department. In this position, you could be driving a sanitation truck to properly collect and dispose of garbage according to SC DHEC regulations. The position includes learning to operate a variety of heavy and light equipment including, but not limited to, front-end loader, dump truck, trash loader, street sweeper, backhoe, bush hog, lawn mower, and tractor. This position is a critically important role within the Public Work’s team that assists in maintaining the City streets and the City’s residents’ properties. As the Heavy Equipment Operator, you would be driving the sanitation truck in City neighborhoods and to the transfer station or designated area to haul collected rubbish.
As a member of the Public Work’s team, you could also be assisting other areas of the department, including, but not limited to: storm drain maintenance, sidewalk maintenance, construction of driveways, edging sidewalks and curbs, ditch maintenance, picking up leaves and limbs, hauling gravel and dirt, storm clean-up, and general cleaning of parking lots and all rights of way.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies as necessary
- A valid South Carolina Commercial driver’s license - Class “B” or Class “A”
- Must be able to comprehend oral and written instructions and have knowledge of (or ability to quickly learn) routine safety practices, truck operation (compactor, hydraulics, etc.) and city streets.
Hourly Non-Exempt Pay: $18.77 - $20.15 per hour based on experience and CDL class
