Currently there are two full-time vacancies and multiple part-time vacancies. This position is responsible for patrolling the Newport Harbor to promote boater compliance with harbor codes, regulations, and ordinances; assisting the boating public by providing general information on harbor programs and services; and assisting boaters in securing moorings, collecting fees, and answering general questions; and other duties as needed.
Selection Components:
- Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of February 5, 2025, or until 150 applications are received, whichever occurs first. Candidates are required to attach a copy of a California Boater Card or equivalent and resume to the online application. Qualified applicants will be invited to a virtual interview.
- Interview: In-person interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of February 24, 2025. Passing applicants will be invited to complete a swim test.
- Swim Test: Tentatively scheduled for the week of March 14, 2025. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
Salary:
- Part-Time Harbor Services Worker: $23.60-$30.12 Hourly
- Part-Time Harbor Services Worker, Lead: $25.62-$37.87 Hourly
- Full-Time Harbor Services Worker: $4,193-$6,195 Monthly
- Full-Time Harbor Services Worker, Lead: $4,552-$6,726 Monthly

The full-time position may work a 4/10 or 5/40 schedule, including weekends. The part-time position will work up to 30 hours per week, including weekends.

The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of pay toward the retirement benefit.

Experience:
Harbor Services Worker: One year of heavy customer service experience working in a harbor or marine environment, including experience operating a marine vessel. Experience in compliance and/or enforcement is highly desirable.
Harbor Services Worker, Lead: Two years’ heavy customer service experience working in a harbor or marine environment, including experience operating a marine vessel. Experience in compliance and/or enforcement and supervisory or lead experience are highly desirable.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. College-level coursework in marine science, seamanship, or a related field is desirable.
License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Possession of California Boater Card or equivalent. Possession of Basic First Aid, CPR, and PC 832 certifications within six months of employment.
