GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under close supervision, this position provides basic first aid to juveniles detained in the residential
programs of the Department of Juvenile Services. Reports to the Health Services Administrator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Follows established medical protocol to provide basic medical care and treatment to Juvenile Detention
residents to include assessing height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and
vision. Obtains medical history, including possible allergies, chronic health problems, drug abuse, and
other pertinent information. Confers with parents to obtain health insurance information.
Coordinates with Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) staff, external nurses and physicians, probation
officers, social workers, therapists, parents, etc., regarding children’s physical and emotional problems.
Makes appointments for residents with various health clinic, doctor’s offices, and may coordinate
hospital emergency room visits as necessary. Provides basic first aid measures for simple injuries and
illnesses.
Administers prescribed medications in accordance with the State Board of Pharmacy guidelines and
physician’s directions. Orders medication refills as directed by the Health Services Administrator.
Assists with maintaining a medical record for each Juvenile Detention resident in accordance with the
Department of Juvenile Justice standards; maintains daily records of medication and treatment
administered; ensures compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA).
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
- Healthcare – Knowledge of basic first aid and medical clinic protocols. Knowledge of local
agencies, and private physicians.

- Customer Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This
Safety - Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to
providing basic first aid and healthcare.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Critical Thinking – Uses logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate complex
solutions, conclusions or approaches to the situation.
- Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships

REQUIRED ABILITIES
- First Aid - Ability to recognize, assess, and apply basic aid techniques. Ability to respond to medical
- Communication – Excellent ability to communicate complex ideas and medical protocol effectively

or emotional situations; responds promptly to customer needs.
- Mathematics – Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations for the essential functions of this
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires completion of a medication training program approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing or
a Commonwealth of Virginia Medication Administration License, with at least one year of responsible
and related medical assistance experience. Experience in a clinical setting preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An acceptable comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state, and sex offender
criminal history check, credit check as well as FBI Fingerprinting; a valid driver’s license with an
acceptable driving record.
This position requires a pre-employment medical evaluation, PPD, and substance abuse testing and is
subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
Individuals in this job classification cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect
complaint.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort.

- Some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Some lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and
materials (20-50 pounds).
- Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or workstation.
