GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, this position performs the most complex mechanical work in the repair
and maintenance of water meters and responds to and resolves a variety of customer requests related
to water service installations. May serve as lead worker. Reports to the Meter Operations
Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Locates and inspects water meters and services; tests, disassembles and repairs water meters, hydrant
meters, and backflow preventers; cleans parts; replaces warped bushings, refits and replaces discs,
spindles and other parts in gear trains; rebuilds or replaces registers; reassembles meters, and assists
with the more difficult assembly of large water meters; works from blueprints and schematics of
meter assembly; makes adjustments to meter boxes.
May assist with the most complex and involved water service field problems and inquiries such as
taking water samples for testing, sprinkler turn-ons, backflushes, flushing services and mains for
water quality issues, cross meter verification, and performing inside examinations for high bill
resolution and leak detection.
Responds to customer complaints regarding water service; checks meters for leaks, performs flow
checks, takes water samples, and performs flushing for water quality problems. Trains employees on
repair and maintenance of meters. Logs and reports meter or system leaks; initiates and updates
work orders for damaged or missing meters.
Operates and maintains assigned vehicles; performs regular vehicle maintenance and general
appearance checks, cleans vehicle and schedules preventive maintenance service.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Meter Repair – Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the installation, operation,
inspection, repair and testing of water meters and meter boxes to include the principles of water
meter testing and operation. General knowledge of RPZ backflow preventer testing requirements
and procedures.
Safety - Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations
related to the meter maintenance and other work related precautions.
Customer Service — Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer
service. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer
satisfaction.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Computer Skills – Utilizes a personal computer with basic applications.
Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships
with employees and the public. Effectively responds to and resolves inquiries and disputes.
Time Management - Plans and organizes daily work assignments. Estimates expected time of
completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Implements
work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.
REQUIRED ABILITIES
Communication – Excellent ability to communicate effectively so others will understand to
include preparation of documentation and work orders. Excellent ability to listen and understand
information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
Mathematics – Ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculations involving water usage and
flow rates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a
valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
This position requires a pre-employment medical evaluation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically
demanding work.
Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping,
kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and
materials (20-50 pounds).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such
