What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Technician - Front Desk, Cash Receipts, and Court position at City of Newport?
Perform a variety of accounting and clerical tasks primarily related to cash collections and the administration of business licenses. Provide reception services for the city Finance Department. Perform administrative functions for the municipal court. Provide administrative support to the Finance Director and Finance Department as needed.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be a high school equivalency with some college courses in finance or accounting, AND a minimum 3 years related experience, or Associates Degree with 2 years’ experience AND a minimum 1-year experience in cash handling.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of current office practices and procedures, basic accounting practices, and general customer service procedures. Computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Mathematical principles. Business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials. Methods and techniques of proper phone etiquette. Methods and techniques for basic report preparation and writing. Methods and techniques for record keeping and filing. Customer service and public relations methods and techniques. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
SKILLS: Skill in the use of personal computers, various related software programs including Microsoft Office 2013 (Excel and Word), and standard office equipment. Strong time management, analytical, organization, and prioritization skills. Customer service orientation and skills in person and over the phone. Exceptional interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well with managers, supervisors, employees, and the general public. Strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Competence in business English, spelling, and punctuation. Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving skills, combined with excellent judgment and professionalism. Strong math skills.
ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with city management, employees, other entities, and the public. Ability to learn legal procedures for the Municipal Court. Ability to maintain efficient and effective systems and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups in a patient, professional, and respectful manner. Ability to communicate complex material in a simple, understandable manner. Ability to effectively function in an intense work environment with numerous interruptions and conflicting demands. Ability to honor the confidentiality of the position. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Associates Degree in Accounting or a related field
The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 5 pounds, and occasionally lift or move materials up to 25 pounds. The position requires the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Manual dexterity and coordination are required more than 50% of the work period to operate equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and standard office equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work location is primarily indoors where work occurs under usual office working conditions.
