The City of Newport is seeking a professional and dedicated individual to fill the position of Firefighter. The position will work under immediate supervision to perform all types of fire suppression, prevention, and provide emergency medical rescue work and patient care as an EMT; promotes fire prevention and code enforcement. Positions assigned to this class perform firefighting and fire prevention work.
Firefighters are expected to perform the full range of fire suppression, safety and prevention duties assigned to the class and to obtain Firefighter I and II skills in all areas of assigned work.
This classification is distinguished from the Fire Engineer classification in that the Fire Engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and related equipment.
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma, equivalent of A.A. Degree in Fire Technology, or completion of Firefighter I coursework.
Knowledge: Modern fire prevention and suppression principles, methods and equipment; including hose lines, ladders, self-contained breathing apparatus, specialized tools and equipment, fire behavior, safety practices, fire prevention programs, NIMS/ICS, and emergency medical care.
Skills: Skill in the use of personal computers, various software programs, and standard office equipment. Self-motivated with proven ability to work independently. Strong time management, analytical, organization, and prioritization skills. Customer Service orientation and skills. Effective conflict resolution, and leadership; exceptional interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences; ability to communicate complex material in a simple, understandable manner; competence in Business English, spelling, and punctuation. Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem solving skills combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.
Abilities: Interact effectively with the public and employees; remain calm and safe during emergency conditions; pass the medical examination, including vision and hearing examinations, and perform the required physical fitness tests for the position; maintain effective working relationships with city management, employees, Council members, other entities, and the public. Ability to write work reports and maintain records and logs; read and interpret technical manuals. Ability to elicit information and cooperation from individuals and groups. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Activity may require exposure to extremely hazardous situation in order to protect people and property. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:
Firefighter I, and Hazmat First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician Basic or greater medical certification.
Possession of an Oregon State driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment, and a driving record acceptable to the city’s insurance carrier.
Must reside within thirty (30) road miles of a Newport Fire Station.

Firefighter II
May be required to perform duties based on 24-hour shifts. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to twenty-five pounds and rarely lift or move materials more than 100 pounds. The position requires the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 70% of the work period to operate equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and standard office equipment. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs, ladders, and over walls, move heavy objects, crawl through tight spaces, and kneel in confined areas.
WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work locations in all types of indoor and outdoor environments. When in the field may be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions and to varying and extreme weather conditions. When responding to emergencies, employees risk physical hazard from smoke, heat, fire, noise, chemicals, bodily secretions, sharp objects, traffic, drugs, and drug paraphernalia. Involves contact with individuals under the influence of drugs/alcohol or who have communicable diseases. Subject to 24 hour call back for emergencies.
