The City of Newport is seeking an experienced, dependable, and professional individual to fill the position of Instructor for our Aquatic Facility, This position will be responsible to organize, plan, and implement the Learn to Swim program. Provide water safety instruction, and/or instruct patrons in an exercise program for youth and adults. Plan, organize, and teach pool patrons swimming, water safety, and water exercise classes. Gather needed equipment, coordinate with staff, and communicate with patrons to ensure the programs meet the needs of the customer.
This is a part-time (less than 20 hours/week) position. MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and experience would be a high school diploma or equivalency, AND 1 year related experience, that may include taking courses though the facility swim lesson management program (Starfish Academy), attending workshops and certification programs, and in-house trainings.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of supplies, materials, equipment, basic rules, and skills involved in a variety of aquatics programs. Knowledge of swimming techniques, water exercise techniques, and overseeing various aquatic and other recreational activities. Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Basic water safety and swim instruction.
SKILLS: Skill in the use of swim instructional aids, personal computers, various related software programs, standard office equipment, and swimming pool equipment. Strong time management, analytical, organization, and prioritization skills. Customer service orientation and skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, and strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving skills, combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.
ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, city management, employees, Council members, other entities, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups. Ability to communicate material in a simple, understandable manner. Ability to assess the needs and communication style of different individuals, including children, adults, and those with special needs, and effectively communicate information to these varied individuals. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.

Valid Oregon Driver's License at time of hire
Knowledge of water safety at time of hire
CPR/First Aid within 30 days of hire
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Training through an accredited water fitness organization
Experience/training in education or fitness

The employee is frequently required to lift, sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 25 pounds, infrequently lift up to 50 pounds, and rarely lift or move materials more than 100 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 40% of the time to operate such equipment as swim instructional aids, computers, keyboards, telephones, standard office equipment, and recreational equipment. The position requires the mobility to interact with and use parks and recreation equipment. The position risks harm from physical hazards, including chemicals, fumes, wet and slippery surfaces, and swimming pools. A high degree of hand/eye coordination is required at all times.

Work location is primarily indoors where most of work period occurs in a recreational/swimming pool setting. Working conditions will vary, depending on assigned programs and will involve considerable exposure to humidity, water, and an environment where chemicals may be present.
