Position Summary
Under the immediate supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor, the Building Maintenance Custodian is responsible for shared custodial needs of varied City facilities. An employee in this position is responsible for the proper use of cleaning equipment and materials and performs a variety of cleaning and sanitation tasks within the buildings or assigned areas of responsibility. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed policies/procedures and little supervision is provided.
Essential Functions:
- Performs daily tasks including dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing, vacuuming and polishing floors and furniture;
- Cleans drinking fountains/water dispensers;
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies, cleans spills; cleans mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.;
- Collects paper and rubbish and empties waste containers;
- Sets up and takes down chairs, tables, and other furnishings for meetings and conferences;
- Collects mail from Post Office and delivers to city hall;
- Moves and sets up furniture, pictures, etc. as needed and assigned;
- Assists with major janitorial duties at other city buildings as required;
Marginal Functions:
- Runs errands and picks up items as needed;
- Performs other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
Position Requirements:
Experience: One to two years of experience in commercial building custodial services. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
Education: High school diploma, or GED. Must have a valid driver’s license
Skills: General knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and materials. Knowledge of proper use of cleaning chemicals and the materials to use on specific furnishings and/or surfaces. Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely including, but not limited to, floor polishing/buffing machine, sweepers, and other mechanized equipment associated with general custodial practices. The ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate orally and in writing. Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. Ability to keep an adequate inventory of needed supplies, and purchase supplies as needed through established methods.
Problem Solving: Ability to solve problems associated with general custodial practices.
Decision Making: Ability to make decisions associated with general custodial practices.
Accountability: Employee is responsible for providing neat and clean facilities as assigned and preparing and furnishing progress reports as needed.
Personal Relations: Some contact with other city departments and occasional contact with the public.
Supervision: None.
Working Conditions: Manual labor is required. Working with chemicals may be a factor in this position.
