TITLE: Clerk
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Planning
NUMBER OF VACANCIES: One (1) Part- Time
PAY RANGE: $15.00 Hourly
**Must be a resident of Niagara Falls, NY within 6 months of appointment**
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work is primarily of routine nature and involves the performance of standardized clerical tasks in assigned department or agency. Although detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments, procedures are rather definitely fixed. However, employees must exercise independent judgment in applying them to specific cases. The work is reviewed by a superior by checking completed work, by periodic or spot checks, by cross checking or by another step in the clerical process. The Clerk performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Answers telephones and gives out routine information;
Operates FAX, copying, personal computer and other office machines;
Sorts, indexes and files mail, bills, requisitions, ledger cards and other material;
Pulls material from files, makes simple file searches and maintains charge-out records;
Checks reports and records for clerical accuracy, completeness and proper extension;
Makes entries on control cards or in ledger from original sources;
Makes arithmetical computations and compiles simple statistical reports;
Type’s correspondence;
Opens and distributes inter-office mail;
Greets visitors and directs them to appropriate area;
Distributes and accepts applications;
Performs basic data entry;
Prepares outgoing mail as needed.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of business arithmetic and English; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; ability to write legibly; clerical aptitude; mental alertness; neatness; accuracy; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
NOTE:
Satisfactory clerical experience can be substituted for the high school requirement on a year-for- year basis.
