Foreman- Traffic and Electrical Signals

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled technical work involving the installation of various traffic signals, traffic control devices, pavement markings, and other devices. The incumbent works along with and exercises direct supervision over a crew of maintenance workers in the performance of the work. General supervision is received from the Traffic Engineering Planner with leeway for independent judgment in the planning and scheduling of the work of his subordinates. The work is evaluated by a superior’s inspections and through review of reports, requisitions and cost involved. The Foreman-Traffic and Electrical Signals performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORKACTIVITIES:
Installs traffic signals and related equipment;
Installs, maintains and repairs traffic counting equipment;
Supervises the maintenance crew in installations and repairs of traffic signals, pavement markings and other devices;
Prepares reports of work performed;
Makes field and office studies of potential and critical traffic situations;
Assist traffic planner with planning and studies of traffic conditions;
Keeps records of work performed.
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the theory, practices, tools, terminology and hazards of the electrical trade; good knowledge of the operation and repair of traffic signal control devices; working knowledge of the theory and principles of electronics; ability to interpret electrical circuit diagrams; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited of New York State registered two-year college or university with an Associate’s degree in electronics in the maintenance of traffic signal controllers;
OR
(B) Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience defined in (A).
NOTE: Additional appropriate education or training beyond high school can be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to two (2) years only; At least two (2) years of appropriate experience is required: High school graduation is required; additional experience beyond four (4) years cannot be substituted for high school graduation.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Eligibles must possess a New York State driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain for duration of employment.
