TITLE: Motor Equipment Operator 2
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: DPW/ Street Construction
NUMBER OF VACANCIES: One (1) Permanent
PAY RANGE: Grade 9 $19.7542 - $23.7772 per hour
(With longevity increments when applicable)
ELIGIBILITY: All permanent City hourly employees. Preference will be given to employees in the Department of Parks & Public Works Street Cleaning.
NOTE: This position may require shift work including afternoons and weekends and overtime as needed.
**Must be a resident of Niagara Falls, NY within 6 months of appointment**
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is difficult equipment operation of a tractor, dump truck, garbage truck and tandem axle dump truck. The incumbent is responsible for operating the assigned equipment within the provisions of the law and for exercising more than ordinary caution with respect to injuries to others, damage to property and for care of the equipment assigned. General supervision is received from the Foreman, Assistant Foreman, Crew Leader or other assigned supervisor. The Motor Equipment Operator-2 performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Operates a tandem axle dump truck in street construction and snow plowing operations;
Drives a tractor for grass cutting and miscellaneous operations;
Drives other types of truck equipment;
May drive a garbage truck used in street can pick-up and delivery of refuse to disposal sites;
Performs manual labor when not assigned to drive.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Skill in operating the various types of trucks and specialized equipment assigned under metropolitan traffic conditions; ability to follow oral directions; ability to operate assigned equipment under all weather conditions; dependability; alertness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of full-time paid experience as a truck driver;
OR
(B) Any satisfactory combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License issued by the State of New York at time of appointment and maintained for duration of employment. Candidates appointed on a permanent basis may be appointed with just a valid NYS Driver License but must obtain the Commercial Driver’s License within the timeframe indicated below.
Special Note: The City of Niagara Falls will pay the $10.00 fee required for the CDL test and will supply the vehicle necessary for testing purpose. However, all practice time for said equipment must be on the employee’s own time. Also, the employee will be allotted a maximum of three (3) attempts to pass the driver’s test or a maximum of sixty (60) working days to obtain required CDL license.
