TITLE: Traffic Engineering Planner
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Traffic
NUMBER OF VACANCIES: (1) Provisional
Grade 22A $29.5837- $41.0732 per hour
**Must be a resident of Niagara Falls, NY within 6 months of appointment**
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is professional traffic engineering work involving the supervision of the City’s Traffic Engineering Division. The work includes the planning, designing and coordinating all aspects of the traffic control systems to facilitate proper flow of vehicular and pedestrian travel. General direction is received from the Director of Public Works. General and direct supervision is exercised over skilled and semi-skilled subordinates. Work is reviewed for applicability and completeness. The Traffic Engineering Planner performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Coordinates the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices, traffic signals, signs and pavement markings;
Authorizes the placement and removal of street lights, traffic control signals, and pavement markings;
Makes studies of complex traffic conditions and directs traffic studies, including accident analysis;
Supervises the collection of traffic data and analyses same, including preparation of traffic counts, etc;
Prepares agenda and recommendations for the Traffic Advisory Commission;
Personally investigates complaints of citizens regarding traffic hazards and acquaints them with possible action which can be taken to solve the problem;
May represent the City in meetings with business and public officials with regards to various traffic problems and solutions to alleviate same.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of modern highway and street design and of the principles of traffic engineering; good knowledge of the installation and operation of traffic signal systems and traffic control devices, signage and pavement markings; good knowledge of the principles of the movement of street and highway traffic; good knowledge of modern methods of analyzing traffic problems; ability to write and speak effectively; ability to deal effectively with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Traffic Engineering or Civil Engineering and two (2) years’ experience in engineering work, at least one (1) of which must have been in Traffic Engineering.
