Job Summary:
The City of Norfolk is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Engineering Technician I to join the Engineering & Public Works team. This entry-level position provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of specialized areas, including fieldwork, surveying, site inspection, computerized drafting, construction permitting, and development projects. The Engineering Technician I may also serve as a generalist, offering crucial support across different engineering and public works functions under the guidance of the City Engineer and/or Assistant City Engineer. Key Responsibilities: * Assist in creating maps, drawings, and gathering field data for various engineering projects. * Provide technical assistance to the public regarding public works infrastructure, construction permitting, and related services. * Support engineering, administrative, and public works staff in a variety of functions. * Participate in diverse engineering tasks as directed by the City Engineer or Assistant City Engineer. Candidate Evaluation: This position is the first step in a three-tiered career progression. Candidates will be evaluated based on their education and experience. Depending on qualifications, this position offers the potential to hire at the Engineering Technician I, II, or III level. Placement within the appropriate level will determine the responsibilities, compensation, and career path. Candidates hired at the Engineering Technician II or III level may take on additional responsibilities and receive higher compensation, reflecting their expertise.
